Cool 200k miles on a car...

Wow, AOL news at the forefront of the auto industry, how long have people been getting 200k+ miles on cars now?

I've got 178k on my '98 Tahoe and it shows no sign of slowing down.

But the trend was underway well before the last downturn. Average vehicle age has climbed steadily for a decade, Miller notes, going from 8.8 years in 1999 to 10.6 years late last year.

He believes longer warranties and financing contracts are two key factors behind the trend, along with the higher vehicle quality.

JEE It wouldn't have anything to do with the home mortgage you have to take out to pay for the overpriced POS would it?

Yeah I was looking at this earlier! Can you believe this BS? My 94 f150 has nearly 300K on it. Theres a 75 monte at the shop that has 500K ON IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Still the original shortblock. My buddies old suburban had nearly 630K on it before his dad gave it to him and then it got blown up. And they expect us to believe that we COULD get over 100 k out of our cars? Are they serious? If I bought a car at the prices nowadays it had BETTER get WELL over 100 grand on the clock before it bit the dust!

72 monte carlo 250,000mi. timming chain went and I gave it to my nehfew who fixed it and used it to deliver pizzas. It had a 350. Then bought a 84 monte carlo chevy V6 330,000 mi. and frame rusted and became unsafe. Then bought 95 jeep grand cherokee has 264,000 mi. and runs like new. Those were the wifes cars, I have a 2003 F250 ford diesel with 162,000 miles. My truck before it 1990 chevy pickup with a 350. Sitting in garage all restored with 330,000 mi. Put 250,000 mi on a 73 jeep with a straight six before the 1990 pickup. Its in the garage all resored with a new body and a 1976 AMC 304 whic has never been rebuilt.

Hell, I bought an MR2 from my father that had 250+ and ran strong(other than 5th being stripped). And I remember reading um....maybe 10 years ago in Hot Rod or one of those some guy with an older Buick or Olds that had over 300k on it.

My '92 GMC had 319K on it when I sold it in 2005. Current owner still has it and uses it to plow snow...in fact I had him plow my alley out last December. My '99 GMC I replaced it with is getting to roll over 150K and I have no intention of getting rid of it anytime soon.

My 2000 GMC Sierra will turn 200,000 miles this weekend. It's running very strong.

I had a '86 Z28 that had 186k on it when we sold it. I know the guy drove that car daily for at least 4 more years....not sure how many miles were on it when he sold it.
My ex father in law had a '89 For pickup with over 300k. It still runs but oil pressure is way low.
A friend had Dodge D-50 4 wheel drive truck that had over 350k on it when the tranny finally let go in it. Put a junk yard tranny in it and continued to drive it a couple more years after that.

My 1995 Saturn SC1 just turned 198,000 yesterday. I had a mint 1994 RWD Cadillac Fleetwood with the LT1 engine that had 297,000 when I sold it. Never had the valve covers off.

[QUOTE=pierced mikey;4018544]Wow, AOL news at the forefront of the auto industry, how long have people been getting 200k+ miles on cars now?UOTE]

The 1979 Pontiac Grand LeMans that I purchased new in May of 1980 had over 217,000 miles on it when I sold it in the spring of 1991.

10 years - 217,000 miles - 19 years ago...

I'm glad to see there are more than 500 comments on the article, exposing how out of touch the author is.
Too bad we couldn't get everyone's testimony from all the car forums that have started a blog about it to flood that page with thousands more comments.

Every car I've bought since 1991 has had over 150K, with the exception of two cream puff LeSabre T types. The last one having only 74K on it when I bought it, would have lasted me a good 15 years or more, if some light fingered toilet dweller hadn't stolen it last August.

"But to echo the hopeful baby boomer assertion that 60 is the new 40, one could say that 200,000 miles is the new 100,000 – thanks primarily to improvements in quality."

what crap. the overdrive/double overdrive transmission is to blame more than 'improvements in quality'.

My '99 Saturn has 176,000 on it, on the original clutch (getting replaced during July 4th shutdown) and looks/runs like new....my wifes '92 Plymouth Voyager is just broken in @110,000 and I expect it to double that.
