Default 66 GTO WOODEN DOOR HANDLES ORIGINAL?

I have a 66 gto convertible original tri power car I purchased from a local man( I had watched this car for years in the gerage) 5 years ago. The vehicle had been stored sence 1980 (tag expired in 79 still on car). I sent the vin in after buying and all options are origonal. Tri-power, rally pkg, 4 speed, console, red and more. The car looks to have never had a fender off and thats why I think it may have a rare option.
This car was built in Nov of 65 (I have the date at home, I believe 15th) and has wooden door handles, they look original and as old as the car but in great condition. I just wondered if this was part of the Rally Pkg, has wooden dash and wheel ( for early 66) but maby could not keep up production and went back to black ?

I know one of you old chiefs will know.

I have included pics.

Thanks Hunter Baker

Thumbs up Very Nice Score!

Hunter - Nice Score!!! Was someone in that family a carpenter? I have never heard of that kind of option as they were always interior color matching vinyl cover over a firm pad. Lets see some good pics of under the hood!

Very nice car, congrats! As for the door handles, probably a Wood Shop project, definitely not original. Kind of cool looking though.

I am going to take one of them off this week and just see if by chance there is a label or some markings.
as far as under hood the car was on the way to the shop when this pic of car was taken( would have driven but brakes just went out). The engine was pulled, rebuit with very mild build up (new pistons and a cam built by dynamic cams) but everything is being put back orig. I am even using any old clamps I can. I will get pics soon. I did buy a new set of BFG's and paint wheels but have never buffed, waxed or polished it yet.

If that's original, I'll eat my hat. Looks pretty nice though. I'd probably reseal them as they look a little dried out.
My '68 has a wooden console lid. I've come to like it so much that I'm going to keep it there...but I know it's not original.

I need to try to find out the original owner, that would be cool! It was sold New in High Point and that is pretty close to the furnature capital of N.C.
Thanks for all the input on the handles ...Yea they do look great! Maby Pontiac should have made them part of the rally Pkg.

What part of S.C. did the car come from?

Not to be an ass but those are usually called armrests.

Looks like your armrests go with a LeMans console my uncle made for me out of walnut back in the late 70s. For some reason the person who bought the car didn't want it. I couldn't understand why for it only squeaked when I went over bumps or drove on rough pavement. If you're interested, I'll see if I can find it when I visit my mom up in CT again.

Being born and raised in High Point, I have to intervene here. High Point NC is considered the Furniture Capital of the World! OK, let's move on. Was it sold new at Bob Neill Pontiac? I remember that dealership. It was at the corner of Montlieu Ave and Main St. It later became Vann York Pontiac.
It's very likely that a former owner worked in a furniture factory and made, or had a friend make, those armrests. Pretty cool! You can't get craftsmanship like that today.

Most definitly not original, but very cool looking. A new set of chrome bases would really set this off. Greg Reids 68 would look nice with a set of these made up to match is console lid (which also looks very cool) IMO.

Nice score! Looks to be in very good condition.

My '66 came out of High Point, NC in 1982 & the story is that the original motor was pulled from my car (hardtop) and installed in an identical '66 convertible that had the wrong motor in it (my car had a '71 350 4bbl motor in it, but the original trans & rearend). How cool would it be if this was the car? That could be my original motor in there? What is the date on the block (4 digits near the distributor). It would need to be Sept-October '65 if original to your car. If it is Late January-February '66, then it is not original to your car, and could be mine

I know it may be a stretch, but it is worth looking into.

Looks nice Hunter. Get some new armrest bases for the wooded pads. With them redone it'll look sharp. Rough on the elbows but still a cool homemade mod.

BTW, I see you have the Goat chained up. Ya gotta get it out and let it run. It needs the excersize.
