Default Dead Soft Copper Header Gaskets:

I've been told people hate these because they leak. I always put the bead (or ridge) to the head and the groove to the header and have good results. Anyone else care to chime in on which way they are installing the copper gaskets????

The openings are WAY bigger than my 28150's and they will leak if you 'clock' the gasket around on the bolts....Not so with the copper...Robert

Oh well, I put the bead to the header. I'm slowly changing over all of our header equipped engines to the soft copper as the old fiber gaskets blow out. I was a true believer in Doug's header gaskets until they changed the composition and thickness. Now they don't last any better than other header gaskets. I haven't had any trouble at all with leakage on the soft copper gaskets - probably because I'm running Doug's headers and the flanges are dead straight. Even if they did develop a small leak, it wouldn't get any larger or blow out. I am trying a set of the soft aluminum header gaskets on the Edelbrock heads (thought it might help having like materials) and results so far have been excellent with no leaks at all. I do anneal the copper gaskets when the headers come off for any reason - don't know if it is necessary, but it can't hurt. The extra cost of the original purchase gets to be a better deal every time they go back on an engine.

Wink By rights..

copper HEAD gaskets are used on O-ringed blocks only. There are some that will seal without O-rings...like the cometics, I believe. Check with the manufacturer. Copper HEADER gaskets will seal themselves...once!.JMHO.Ron

I put a set of Copper gaskets on my old TA and all they did was make the leak MUCH louder. It was probably the cheap headers, but the copper gaskets didn't help any over normal gaskets.

I bought a set awhile ago to replace my Doug's. CRE or something like that. The ports on my 96's were larger and I had to open them up to fit the port. By that time, I was into the raised part of the copper and the gasket would not seal. I trashed them and put back on my old set of Doug's gaskets. No leaks.
