I'm going to be buying a new reproduction hood tach for my Firebird in the very near future. Is there a difference between the tachs offered by the various aftermarket suppliers?

Are the tach #'s and lines in a greenish hue? on the 67 firebird tach. The GTO tach #'s etc for 67 are white.

I don't know for sure but I'll find out. The hood tach I have presently is a dixco so it's not original.

I'm happy with the one I got from Ames. Been on the car for at least 5 years with no problems.

There are 5 hood tach on the market

one that is very good but after 5 years it needs a tap or two to get the needle working and when it gets hot it does not work at all - I have 2 of this tach - both do the same - they said send it back but it is all painted perfect so i deal with it.

a ca based company sells another version and it is a black case and the worst on the market but also the cheapest $165 you get what you pay for, looks bad not the right shape.

an IL company makes a nice one also it is equal to the first but the needle and the face are plastic and the bottom has no shape to it and it is 225.00

another company also sells another one that has the face and the case molded as one - not like the original.

The last one is the best on the market - it has the right shape, color , metal needle, metal face, correct formed bottom, works great and here are the pictures. Compare don't take my word for it.

So what do I win that is the parts place tach Correct?

The parts place one is OK - the needle is plastic and the face is plastic and the outer cover has a big dip in it but and the wrong contour on the edge but it looks ok - The original has a sharp edge profile and the face is metal and so is the needle. And when it lights up the light is bounced off the metal parts to light up the face not back light through the plastic face But the large angled plastic needle is the dead give away without having an original next to it.

I am still confused, please give some more info on your prefered tach. Also, I am wondering, is it compatible with electronic ignition?

I got the el cheapo run of the mill hood tach from Classic industries and it is works just fine.

I do like the original style look of the Tach from the Parts place. The vacuum port is neat. Was that factory?

I absolutly hate eveything that I have ever got from the parts place.

I bought mine from Early Birds in Canada for my 68. Has the 2 bulbs, needs a tap every once in awhile as the needle will stick at times, collects moisture but other then that and the fact it is useless at the track it's okay. Mine has a white bottom.
