You sitting on top of the computer? Each time I post, seems like you are "The Man". First to respond. You are not the only one who needs the inspiration !! After being gone the next month or so, will need a kick in the arse to get started again. Been pushing a bit the last three weeks getting the car home plus getting everything ready to leave. Will be leaving on Sunday, will be up on line here only until tomorrow night. Mike |

Hope for the Garage yet !!!
So busy trying to ready to go on vaction, get the car finished enough to bring home,
finish prepping and painting the 3 car, car garage floor for my wife, I sorta let my shop go and only made room for the Hurst to have place to rest while I'm gone on vacation. First order of business when I get home is a reorg of the shop. Then who knows whatelse she has for me to do? This vacation is more for her as she needed some undivided attention as my mistress (Miss Hurst Convert) has and will have me consumed for a bit longer. Wife really is excited and looking forward to seeing the car finished and the trip to POCI next fall. (Maybe more the trip back east than seeing the car done--who knows) Na she's all good with the car as she loves the history behind it. Take care Mark and thanks again for the encouragement. Your car have a power antenna? See tech post re: needing mounting hole, pics and measurements. Thanks, Mike |

Noppers
Todd,
Thanks for the nice comment. The car is the real deal. Have the protecto plate with Hurst Campbell and vin, letter from Rosalie Brewstein (Geo Hurst Executive Secretary, notarized). Rosalie bought the car from Geo at the end of these cars promo tours. There were three built. Her son Cliff Swartz and his friend Jerry Lane drove the car out from New Jersey to Reno Nevada in the late 80's. Cliff decided he was goning to put the car in Hemmings and sell it and Jerry stepped in and bought it before that happened. Jerry had it in various stages of restoration, outside storage for 3 years and inside storage for 18 years before I was told a VERY long sob story about his saga with this car. At one time we were going to partner up for the restoration but he wanted too much for his interest. Sort of died for a while and the he made me an offer of the car for sale. After some thought and further reasearch I decided to buy the car for a frame off restoration. As testified by Rosalie, one was dropped off of a transport on the way to a show and mine. She thought Jack Huff a GM engineer had the other. I contacted his widow and he only owned "Gold and White" cars according to her. After further reaseach and digging around, Dennis Kirban told me about Doc Watson's car. It is in a Warehouse in Las Vagas, owned by Jack "Doc" Watson, who was Geo Hurst's employee. He was responsible at the time (before and way after this car) for creating unusual color combos for drawing attention to a "Hurst Car" and did so at the direction of George. Speaking with Doc about these cars, they were called Bat Mobiles by the working staff who actually painted and laid out these cars for paint and equiptment modifications. This is a very long and interesting story. I'm on vacation right now and am on a very tiny notebook computer that is giving me hand cramps trying to type. Give me a call if you want to hear the rest of thre story. I have tons of documentation that gives this car a huge paper trail and provanance. No clone's here, not in my garage or from my hands. Thanks for your interest. Mike Pemberton 510-501-6299 |

Pete Serio who has written the book on the history and repair help on all the shifters Hurst built, reviewed the pictures I sent him of my shifter as it looked odd to me as it looked like someone took a cutting torch to the bottom of the mounting frame. He told me it was a 67 GTO His and Hers that had been modified to fit the Grand Prix. As for the rest of the car it is a 428HO, long branch exhaust manifolds, 376hp,Qjet carb and manifold. Open element chrome top air cleaner. Fully loaded, A/C with ATC, P/S, P/Drum Kelsey Hays brakes, Power antenna, power drivers seat, manual reclining passanger seat, power top, power trunk release, cruise control, emergency under hood light, trunk light, cornering lamps, tilt column, wood sport wheel, black buckets with head rests, sholder harnesses, remote side mirror, 3.08 posi, dual exhaust, 5 Hurst Gold centered cast Alumnium wheels with chrome trim rings, blue line tires on the 14x7" rims. Rare trimmed rear wheel wells on the car that Geo drove (the one I have) using Catalina trim. Was added on as the GP's rears were chromeless as they all came stock with fender skirts and were not trimmed. The trim was applied to Georges car to help set off the special wheels and gold paint that had a gold metal flake over lay on the gold base. I was lucky enough to have DuPont find the Gold formula in their archives. Have the PHS and sure I have missed something. Will be at POCI next fall, hope to see you there. Mike |

Mike about the repaint, is that the original colors as it was as a show car? Never seen one like it but it sure looks nice. And congrats on getting her home where she's safe.

Original colors as done for Hurst by Doc Watson
Quote:
JacK "Doc" Watson was hired by George Hurst to do the new paint, grafics and equiptment options for his cars in the mid 60's. Doc was responsible for creating the color combinations and approved by George. The Gold was a special gold done by DuPont with overlay of Metal Flake. The blue stripe was done in conjunction with the promotion of GoodYears blue line tires. The blue stripe is a GoodYear blue of that era. When I got the car it still had the stripes under a cheap coat of primer as well as the gold paint. You can see the car on line if you Google 1967 Daytona 500. When it comes up, about three entries down is a link call "Web Shots" by Hugh Grishom. Inside there will be several pictures, some with the car and Linda Vaughn. The car I have was driven by George to work and showed on the weekends. Doc told me the guys in the shop, when the cars were done, called them Bat Mobiles because of the colors. I have a picture of Docs car that he sent to me. His had Gold inserst panels, like racing strips like the 1968 Hurst Oldmobiles they did for production. Docs panels are on the trunk and the hood as well as the Gold side insert. I am on vacation and have limited access to my pictures etc. or I would send you some shots of all of the cars. Thanks for the interest and hope I have answered your questions. Feel free to call me anytime. Mike Pemberton 510-501-6299 Last edited by Mike Pemberton; 09-25-2009 at 01:04 AM. |
