Default Muncie M20 upgrade

Upgraded my M20 with a Auto Gear super case and rear bearing support to go behind a 461. The 461 has a Crane RA4 copy and 6X4 heads ported by me using Jim Hands book as a guide. The car it is going in has a 355 10 bolt rear with 28" tall X9 1/4 wide street tires and will weight (guessing) 3000-3300 lbs, maybe a bit more. Will be run on the street 99% of the time so I'm not too concerned in that area. My concern is with the few times I will take it to the track with slicks and hooking up. Will the super case hold up? I know, I should maybe be more worried about the 10 bolt but I hope to replace that with a stronger rear before going to the track but in the meantime I will be running the 10 bolt. Thanks.

Jack.

I've got an Autogear Muncie. I bought it from the guys in Syracuse, NY

http://autogear.net/

I don't know if your "upgrade" will be as strong as the ones that those guys build from scratch or not....

I've run mine at 11.8-11.9 in the quarter , 118-119 mph. Last visit had terrible traction problems and I plan on hooking better next visit (I had 26.5x10x15 mickey thompson slicks). It is a 3700lb 69 gto vert. (not including my fat-ass 230lbs in it). So far 3000rpm at launch.

IF....yours ends up as strong as the ones they build, then I think you'll be fine w/ that motor in a 3300lb car....

And not all 10bolt rears are the same. The 8.5 10 bolt found in many 70's cars can be built plenty strong. The 8.2 BOP 10 will give up before the autogear tranny.

Get a 12 bolt up under that thang. Sounds like a good mod for the M20. Let us know how it does.

Default Thanks

Thanks for the replies guys. I have another thread here looking for a stronger rear that will be a drop in replacement for the 10 bolt. When I bought the Auto Gear case I also bought their re-build kit that included all new bearings (including their larger input or output shaft bearing), seals, main gear shaft and syncro rings.

GTOGreg, you might be interested, the last time the 34 was at a strip it was at Fremont Drag Strip about the mid 70's. Do you know when they tore it down?
Jack.

Jack,

They shut it down at the end of the season in '88. Wouldn't you know I arrived here in '92? I've driven down to where it used to be and you can see the track (with its numerous cracks and grown up weeds) and the old entrance. It is in a PERFECT location (aside from the smelly dump), as there are very few residences around. However, they built an auto mall and some high tech businesses have sprung up around there as well. The nearest track is Infineon in Sonoma but that is way too far for South Bayers to drive. I'd like to see them try to re-open it. I think it would do a GREAT business. You know how things are now though with the NIMBYs and big business. Still think it could be a profitable venture and keep a lot of people safe from street racing. It sits where the proposed Fremont A's ballpark was planned...so I'm not holding my breath. Too bad. Love seeing pics from the 60's and 70's.

Hi Greg,
Thanks for the reply. I moved to Wa. St. from the S. Bay in 1976. I wish I had taken more pics at the track back then. I think what ones I took are either with the X or buried in a box somewhere in the garage. I will look for them someday when I have the time.

Jack.
