Thumbs up E85 conversion results

I just converted my Firebird over to E85 with a kit from raceone85.com.It is a 8896 Dominator and the kit converts it to a two circut carb. The car fired right up and idled well after warm up and had good throttle response.I went to the track last night and the car went 9.93@136 off the trailer with a sloppy 1.46 60' in 2000'DA with 100GPP water grains. It was pretty lean with 99 square jets, went to 102 square and ran a 9.87 in worse air.The plugs still looked lean but I didn't have any bigger jets.Third run went 9.90,over reving the 1-2 shift(6800 ouch).I'm pleased and think there is more in it with jetting and timing, also the water grains were up to 115 on the last run.The intake is cool to the touch when the water is at 160*. I paid $2.10 a gal for e85 vs $8.00 gal gr 110 race gas and the car is about .10 and 1 + mph faster in equivalent weather.

On the turnpike here in Orlando.I think there are some stations nearer you, go to raceone85.com and he has a link to stations across the country. There are guys running up to 15-1 on it and I'm over 13.5-1 now.I'm going to fill up my empty race gas drum so I don't have to go chase it all the time.

It's a pretty extensive conversion, metering blocks, booster, bigger needle and seat.Quickfuel makes the blocks and boosters.

Yeah,I ordered mine from raceone85.com ,Heath is a good guy and will help you get it dialed in.It's a few bucks cheaper through Summit, but I wanted to give him the business.

That $2.10 "race gas" is pretty sweet, eh?

I converted about two years ago. There are a few things to be aware of.

If you let the carb bowls go dry you will eventually develop some white crud in the bowls. I think this is actually from the water that is in E85 and not the E85 itself. So if you park the car for long periods of time drain the fuel bowls and spray them with wd40. I also run some marvel mystery oil in the E85 to try to slow down the corrosion, and to lube the fuel pump.

I know that you know this but for others considering the conversion you MUST replace or coat any steel parts in the fuel system, because they will rust.

And you need a healthy fuel pump because you'll use about 30% more E85 on a pass.

I have a hard time getting the engine warm, it takes forever now. My performance was exactly the same as on race gas when I got everything tuned out.

Buddy of mine running a camaro also switched to E85 soon after I did. They race every weekend and used to buy race gas by the barrel. They have saved a lot of money running E85 and have been happy with it.

E85 is rated at about 105 octane, but it has properties that allow people to run crazy compression ratios, or lots of boost.

yep..i am sure my pontiac will thrive on e-85..i have converted my 12.5-1 sbc vega, and a 12.5-1 383 sbc el camino..works (cant say breasties on here?..lmao)..saves tons of dollars on fuel..throttle response seems better than gas, runs cooler..the savings alone pay for the kit in 2-3 tankfuls..i got my kits from heath daniels also..really nice fella, and seems to know the stuff..i have not been able to do any dragstrip testing yet, but most folks get better performance..even if it equals gas, the cost of fuel alone makes it a winner..nitrous kits are easily tuned for it, and it can be run "fatter" than gas..it runs the same timing as gas..

and it will blend with nitromethane easily..

Just a starting point for this year. 535 cu.in. Actually 11-1 now

Worry about this combo later.
New combo for next year will be 13.5-1 with a plate. Most local races will be 82 limited nitrous jet..................... but other organizations will be unlimited plate jets.

Wise move since E-85 can contain anywhere from 70%-85% ethanol by volume and still meet federal regulations to be classified as E-85. Just be prepared to go through the jets again on the next drum fill if the batch the station gets before your next fill up is not the same.

Good deal Mark. It looks like there is 5 stations but none very close to me here.
Would the e85 site show all or just the ones belonging to the group?

It's from the alcohol in the fuel. Methanol racers go through the same deal...it's the alcohol corrosively reacting with the metal. It's why alky racers with aluminum fuel tanks typically get them anodized.

I wouldn't recomend that, since E-85 is still 15%-30% gasoline by volume...and gasoline is not "soluble" with nitro'.
