Default Help Identify Chrome Headers

Hi,
I just bought a set of used chrome headers for my 68 GTO. They were listed in the performance parts section of these forums. Seller didn't answer my question.
The only marking I can find on them is the number 1008 on each of the flanges.
Any idea what brand they are?
I have looked on the Summit and Jegs websites without luck and tried to google them.
I would like to download the installation instructions from the internet, if I can or get a copy from one of the PY Forum members.
Thanks,
Mike

Headers with installation instructions?

Steps:
  • Hook up engine hoist to engine
  • Loosen engine mount bolts to frame
  • Put car on jack stands in front
  • Loosen factory exhaust from manifolds
  • Loosen manifolds from cylinder head
  • Remove manifolds
  • Replace manifold with headers
  • Bolt to head
  • Reverse procedures for jack stands, engine mounts, engine hoist
  • Drive to exhaust shop to complete

Hi,
Still haven't been able to determine the maker of the chrome headers that I have.
What length 3/8-16 bolts should I buy? I see that they come in 0.75 and 1.00 inch under head length. I did a component stack up and found that most threaded holes in the cylinder head are about 5/8 inch deep.
Given 1/16 inch for the washer, 1/8 inch (2/16) for the gasket, 1/4 inch (4/16) for the header flange and 5/8 inch (10/16) for the threaded hole, It adds up to 1-1/16 inch. One inch under the head length should be fine.
Am I right?
Should I buy 12 point headed bolts? Some of the flange holes are under pipes and hex and allen might be difficult to use.
Thanks for the advice,
Mike

Pontiacs, headers and cursing go hand in hand don't they?

Hi,
Saw them when I looked at the available bolts on Summit's website.
Their under head length is only 0.75 inches. Is this enough with 0.625 inch taken up by washer, flange and gasket?

Hi,
I bought the 1.00 under head length header bolts. Did a trial fit of the bolts in the flange holes. Glad I did, found holes next to the inner D-Ports that the shaft of the bolt would not go in. Used a dremel tool to grind away at opposing sides to provide clearance. I would have been really upset if I had the headers loosely mounted and couldn't get those bolts in the holes. Now all I have to do is find the fiber exhaust gaskets by FelPro and I will be ready to tackle this job.

Some may argue but, I had great success with the copper ones never leaked and never did a re-tighten, just my .02

Are you saying the 1" is to long??? Was going to get them and had to re read what you wrote...they won't slip into the hole because they hit the tubes...?

Hi,
No they will fit, it is just that the header tubes block a direct insertion into the bolt holes on one of the middle D-Ports. I just had to grind a small amount of metal on that bolt hole to get them to be able to be inserted. I plan to use lock washers under the heads of the bolts so there is plenty of surface around the holes to bear against.
I just assumed that having about 1/2 inch of threads into the threaded holes in the cylinder heads was better than about 1/4 inch of grip.

I figured it was number 5 because it just seems impossible to get that bolt out without the headers being out of the way. That means you can't start it unless the headers are out of the way...Which means it has to be started before the headers are in place.
Seems that some folks cut a slot in the flange so that they can start the bolt and then slide the header flange on.
If you don't cut that flange, I don't know how you get them on..Unless I just had the wrong brand of headers. That is, cheapos.

Hi,
Here are the pics.
A little grinding solved the problem.
