mini spool-will it break
My wife's bracket car is getting a trans brake for this season but has a 31 spline mini spool in a 9" Ford rear.
I'll probably put in a full spool later but just not sure if really required as this car is easy on parts. It's 2300 lbs with driver/4.56 gear and a 300 hp SBC. Do you think the mini would live with the T-brake? |

dont do it! it will break. I destroyed a 31 slpine one and ruined the case too, weighed a little more and was running low 11's at the time, and had 455 torque with 411s! but Id recommend against

With the SBC I would worry about the Carrier or the pin breaking first. With only 300hp the Minni is good. get over 400hp then you can worry about the Minni.

i ran one in my firebird before i went to aftermarket axles. 28 spline steel mini and i went mid 10s, 3500 pounds. i did strip an aluminum one out, then went with the steel one. when i broke an axle i went to 35 spline and a real spool.

I"ve been looking for a good used one but no luck for 2.892 housing. I think I'd rather risk the mini than cough up for new.

A friend of ours on our racing team had a 79 Monte Carlo that weighed 2770 with driver - had an sbc 350 with 76 cc 400 scb heads - flat top pistons and a 305S-10 Comp Cams Magnum hydraulic cam. car ran low 12's most of the time, went a best of 11.91 running a T-350 with line lock both on the front and rear wheels with an air controlled throttle stop all hooked up to the delay box, car had mid to low 1.60's 60' times with a narrowed 9", 31 spline axles and a mini spool. He broke so many carriers and pins it almost wasn't funny (but it was kinda lol) The 9' mini spool set up is no where near as strong as a GM set up because a 9" carrier gets un-bolted into two halves, replace the spider gears with the mini spool but there is about a 1/2 inch of space from the mini spool to the inside of the carrier which gives the applied torque "leverage" on the cross pin which wants to turn it into sort of a "Z" untill it and the carrier breaks.
The GM set ups are a 4 peice deal where the square chunks that act as the small pinion gears where the cross pin goes through goes right up against the inside of the carrier where there is no gap at all, that way the pin, which is by the way a larger diameter pin than what the 9" pin is, would have to be "sheared" off as the torque has no "leverage" to try to bend the pin till it breakes type of deal. I ran a mini spool in my Wagon untill 2002 going 1.401 in the 60' with a T-brake at 3300 lbs. then it went into my Dads 79 Grand Prix going low to mid 1.40's 60' since then... They're pretty tough but the 9" ones are a NO NO!!! Go to Ebay and look up a seller named Staticz2229 he has a lot of 9" stuff and it's mostly Strange stuff, I got my whole Strange center section kit from him, case, spool and installation/bearing kit for less that half of what Summit or Jegs would have been. Here is a link to a spool he has, it may not be what you need but click on his other items and I'm sure you'll find what you need or call him, he'll get it! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...3731&viewitem= Thanks D. With stock axles why do more? I might have used a welder instead.

This car is using shortened stock axles but the 31 spline units from this Ford are the same diameter as my 33 spline Moser axles in the T/A and huge compared to the factory axles that were in my 10 bolt. The steel may not be as good but they sure are beefy.
I checked the link from D. Miles and think I've got a deal from him. Thanks |
