Default TH350 swap to 700R4 - CROSS MEMBER help

I have a 1977 T/A that originally came with a TH350 but I have a new, built 700R4 tranny waiting to go in - I haven't got my motor back from the machinist yet but I know the cross member won't bolt straight up. Can I turn it around or flip, cut the pad & re-weld it? Or, do I have to get an after market cross member? I know I have to have the drive shaft shortened... The $$$ are adding up fast! Need to reduce spending but I won't cut corners to the point of jeopardizing the integrity of what I have invested to this point...

HELP!

Anyone got one laying around collecting dust? Maybe you stubbed your toe on it and want to get rid of it? Maybe you can fabricate one that is better and less expensive?

I don't know if you can mod the one you have or not. I know you said you have to cut cost but if you need to get a new one you can get it from Summit Racing.

For your car Summit #SUM-770318 will do it, $197.95. These crossmembers are very strong, bolt right in, powder coated and allow for large exhaust pipes. Good luck, hope you make out ok with your Firebird.

There are good x members out there, with lots of exhaust clearance.

I have cut the pad off and welded to the backside too, it works.

I did the TH350 to 2004R swap few years ago. I believe we used a TH400 member, but I didn't like how close the tranny pan was to the cross member, so my buddy refabbed it. Kinda frankenstein looking, but now has plenty clearance. Here are pics of fabrication...

Default Wow!

That was some fabrication job! You wanna whip out another one? :-) Nice job - But I have to say, while building up to the final job I was getting scared! Came out great tho!!

PS - I uploaded some pix of my project - probably be a while till I really need the cross member!

I did the swap on my '68 bird a number of years ago. I just used a th400 crossmember. can't say too much for exact fit, cause the crossmember I got had the mounting pad in crooked. I grinded the welds and took the pad off, positioned the crossmember and mount with the tranny in place, and tacked the mount on. (then removed and fully welded it. the mount was close to the pan, but no interference. I don't know what they run now, but I remember getting taht crossmember for $69 from tamraz of ebay, of-course, technically it was a defect.

I moved the crossmember back about 2 inches, and drilled 4, 3/8 holes in the frame. Im not saying its the right way, but its worked for me for 3 years...
