Default Home Made Headers

I'm ready for the criticism! Here is my first attempt at building my own headers. The first ones I modified were too low to the ground since I had to go under the frame. I went OVER the frame with these. Check em out

I don know, I think they look cool. I'm hoping to finish them on sunday

Looks good but isn't that crazy bend on the top pipe before the collector in your last picture a little restrictive??

Yeah it is, now I don't remember why I did it like that. Space is so limited and I started out with a set of headers I already had. It was probably the easiest way to get it them to line up or something. If I could do it over I would start from scratch and buy new collectors instead of tryin to modify these to work. I don't think it'll hurt performance that much.

I'm no header expert but having plumbed a few saltwater fishtanks I know each bend in the line reduces water flow pretty dramatically. I would guess it would be the same for exhaust gass.

I'm not too worried about it. It's not like it will be bogging it down any. I want to buy a mandrel bender and redo it all eventually anyway. But yes I could have made less bends but I'm just tryin to make this work with my limited space.

Well, I think it is beautiful! Nice work! I'm sure you'll get considerably better flow than stock exhaust manifolds. What is the chassis/engine???

It's a '59 Star Chief original 389 and I'm puttin' a 4 speed behind it.

There you can see how low the headers were when I modified them. That's why I'm ditching those and starting over.

There's the motor

A word of advice, support the front of the head pipes good to keep the weight off the headers, I had my modified set good on my 68 GP and the one weld kept breaking. Other than that, those are looking good. Pat

I thought about making a support but I figured anything bolted to the frame would just break once the torque from the motor twists. I'm gunna put an exhaust type support on the collector and see how that goes.

Thanks guys

Yes a nice rubber mount towards the front is what I was talking about. I cracked mine 2 times before going to Doug's Headers on my 68 GP. Nothing worse then getting them welded then having to pull them to fix again. Just something to think about. Pat

After looking at the pics of the headers. I think the best place for a rubber mount would be off the trans cross member. Just to keep most of the weight off the headers. The back one under the rear seat would hold most of the head pipe then. Pat

Hey Poison,
Looking good. I've been taking a welding class and welding pipe is a real challenge. You're on your way to being a header building expert. Plus it's cool to say "I built these"

I'm not the best welder but this little tubing is hard to weld. I had never welded before and within the first week I did the whole exhaust system on my daily driver. That 2.5" tubing is a lot easier to weld than this little 1 5/8". I love welding, you can make whatever you want.
