Default 79 400 4 speed

Hello.. I am looking at a 1979 400 4 speed Trans Am. It is black on black and the owner said it had bandit stripes on it before repaint. What on the data plate is stamped if any to tell if it is a Y84 car and did the SE cars come with black interior or were all with the camel interior? It is a z code 400 4 speed car with t-tops with WS6 with the correct PWH block. Thanks. Bryan

I would say your best bet is to get the PHS(Pontiac Historical Society) on the car, this will tell you for sure if it's an SE car.

A '79 SE should have Y84 stamped on the data plate close to the bottom right corner. Other than that you need to get PHS documentation or start taking the seats out or tank out and find the build sheet.

Norwood built cars were stamped Y84 on the cowl tag,but Van Nuys were not,I believe.

If you have a Van Nuys build, there's a good chance you can find the build sheet on top of the gas tank or from behind rear seat backrest.

If ti is a true 79 400 4 speed the fifth digit in the vin is Z.

I know by the vin it is a z code car and it does have the correct PWH block just finding if it is a SE but may have to do the PHS on it. Bryan

It will be the best $50 you ever spent. It's saved quite a few people from a big mistake.
