ZDDPlus is a good choice, PY offers them for $10.00 per bottle. The part # is RPZ163.

Nope; but it looks like I'm going to have to start. I knew they were in the process of removing zinc from "regular" oils like Penzoil, Quaker, Valvoline, etc.; so I have been using Shell "Rotella". But now our supplier informed us that it has been removed even from that because the "zinc" can stop up the catalytic converters. More intereference from the "Green" community.
Supposedly even GM's famed "EOS" break-in additive has been discontinued because it had zinc. So we had to buy a can of "MOA" from BG Products to break in the new cam & lifters in my nephews car. It was $7.49 for an 11 ounce can. Can find at: www.bgprod.com.

Why mess around with additives when certain synthetic oils like AMSoil has high zinc levels?

My apologies to those who have had negative experiences with AMSoil.

GM E.O.S. is available where i live . Amsoil is too expensive $80.00 just for oil . When i was in Florida in February i picked up Mobil 1 15/50 $20.00 2 large jugs and 2 quarts, to do the GTO and Olds. I have used that for years with no issues and have not added any zinc additive to either engine. Both cars have 60psi pressure at cruise speed. I will be picking up more Mobil 1 15/50 when i go to Syracuse next week . I just wish they would sell it here again .

Yes....always have...GM EOS is what I use.. Briefly discontinued early this year, production has been reinstated with a different part number. Zinc and Phosphate contents are the same though. As "abefroman" stated the new part number is 88862586..

I stand corrected. My local parts man at the "GM" dealership said that it had been discontinued. He said that there would be a replacement available soon; but that it would be a "zinc alternative".

I don't think it has much as it used to. How could anyone have a problem with the best product on the market?

Rotella has zinc, I use it. Also for the first 2 oil changes in my new motor I added a bottle of GM EOS

I have read that Rotella oil still has approx 1200 ppm of ZDDP in it,down from about 1400 ppm, still enough to provide protection in a flat tappet cam motor. If you can find an MSDS on line or somewhere else,I would think they would by law, have to list the amount of ZDDP it contains. The company has also stated that they have no plans to further reduce the zinc content, according to what I read.(magazine article)

Is Rotella oil made for desiel trucks? I was reading the back of the bottle, and it said it was for desiels? Is this right? Can you run it in your car?
Help me out.
Can you buy Rotella at Walmart?

Yes,thats right, it was originally designed for deisels.Big rigs are going to catalytic converters, thats why Rotella has cut back on the zinc level(according to what I read)There's no reason why it won't provide satisfactory lubrication in a flat tappet motor, just because it was designed for deisels.I used it for break-in on my 400,and my son is running it in his big-block chevy with good results. We also add an oil supplement at each change for an extra margin of safety.I believe rotella is available at wal-mart.Use the 15-W30if its available,15-40 being the second choice.

Most of the cam companies have a break in additive. If you install their cam and don't use it,there is no warranty. Check out cam companies websites under warranty.

We use Rotella and a bottle of additive from comp cam or whatever cam company the cam comes from. Also put another bottle in at oil change like they tell you.

1. Some--but not all--"Diesel" oils are in fact DUAL RATED; Diesel and gasoline. Look on the back at the starburst. IF it has Compression-ignition and Spark ignition ratings--it's fine for your gasoline engine. (so, for example CJ and SF ratings)

2. Do you have stiff enough valvesprings to need more high pressure additive than is already in Rotella and other dual-rated oils?

3. Nobody is "eliminating" the high pressure additives; but they are being reduced some. If the cam is already broken in; and the valve springs are stock-to-mild performance--good chance you don't need additives.
