Default Unsticking a stuck engine--your tips?

So I have this 455 out there and it was stuck. I sprayed some WD in the cyl and let it sit overnight--nothing. So I fabbed a BIG lever to attach to the crank at the rear and put some trans fluid in the cyls. It moved a little. So I worked it back and forth and found that it had a little bit of a sticking point where it must've sat for a while.
It will rotate now, but it is nowhere as free moving as I'd like it to be.

What would you do at this point? I put more trans fluid in and inserted the spark plugs again.
Thanks,

Years ago I broke loose a 66 Wildcat 400 engine that was seized. I filled the crankcase up till the dipstick tube overflowed, including the cylinders with light oil. I let it set that way for two weeks. Eventually I was able to break the crank loose by hand with a breaker bar and patience. I would turn it a little at a time and let it set for a few days in between. After it turned over by hand with ease I drained the oil, refilled correctly and changed the filter.

When I got it started and tuned, we drove it for several years at my old place of employment. It was actually a very reliable car and surprised us.

From your description, your engine sounds to be in better shape than ours was to start with. You may be fine if you are patient with it.

Aero Kroil hands down the best penetrant out there. Not cheap though.

My Monza was stuck after 19 years in a garage. Literally, I pulled the plugs, filled the cyliners with PB Blaster, and let it sit for 1 week. I put a bar on the crank nut and it turned right over. I then spun it with the starter and blew PB all over the garage. Cool. I've never used anything better on a stuck, rusted, anything. The best part, you can buy it by the gallon...

I had a neighbor, an older guy who was into vintage tractors....he swore by brake fluid....If I remember right he used to warm it up before he would pour it into the cylinders....

Marvel Mystery oil is the best I've found. When I worked in the starter field, we had a 52 Plymouth towed in because it wouldn't start. After testing, it appeared to be a bad starter[it just drew 500 amps and wouldn't budge the engine]. I pulled the starter and tested it and it was fine. The engine was siezed up solid as a rock. When I told him the bad news he said it used to run fine. I suggested that he fill the cylinders up with Marvel Mystery oil and let it soak for a week and try it. Two weeks later he came driving up in that old Plymouth. Said he did the Marvel trick and it turned over after a week or so and he started it up and it has been running fine. He thanked me for the suggestion and went along his way.

That stuff works very good. I have unstuck several other engines with it also.

Another vote for Marvel Mystery oil.

That's what we use on old tractors that have been sitting outside for many, many years.

I also had a guy here at work say that CocaCola works well, too (I'm serious).

x3 on the Marvel mystery oil. So far the only thing I have un-seized with it is a 1947 CJ2A L-head, a lot less sticking surface area than a 455, but nonetheless, that stuff works well. Good luck.

Oh yeah, I did use Marvel about 20 yrs ago to unstick a Datsun 1600 engine. It sprayed the stuff all over the car next to it when it let loose.

I use compressed air to break it free. Heres how I do it. All spark plugs out . Smart bet would be to loosen rockers too. Penetrating oil in all cyls.

Find any piston at TDC or the cyl with the piston closest to TDC. Use the fitting from your compression tester or leakdown tester with sparkplug thread on one side and quick disconnect on other side. Screw it into the cyl you selected near TDC.

Stand aside and hook up the air hose from your compressor to the air fitting. Motor breaks free with a large bang. Soak times and penetrating oils are up to you.

Heres the math.... 4.15 bore. 13.52 square inches of area. 100 pounds per square inch

= 1350 lbs of force pushing down on piston. Try that with a breaker bar.

You can turn up air pressure for more force if necessary.

I just did one with 2 cans of PB Blaster. The wife said it stunk up the basement. 2 days and I was able to take it apart.

That's the only down side to the PB, it definitely has it's own, unique smell...

Similar idea to above.
Pull plugs, spray PB in the cylinders, let soak over night.
WITH PLUGS IN, turn motor as much as you can. The compression pushs the PB around the rings and down the walls.Nice thing about PB, it lubes as well as dissolving light rust.
Repeat once a day for a week.

Has worked for me in the past.

One more vote for PB Blaster.
Stuck 400, pull plugs and spray each cylinder til full. Next day use breaker bar on pulley rotate 90 degrees, more PB. It turns over really easy and doesn't wipe away as easy as WD-40.

Heck, I was afraid to use PB, not knowing what it might do to softer metals like cam & crank bearings.

PB smells like a bug spray we used in pest control.

The compressed air sounds like a pretty good idea to me.

Thanks,
Are you thinking you are going to run this engine now that you have free'd it up? Rusted cast rings will no longer seal...
