Default Headlights On... Parking Lights On Too?

What's needed to get the parking lights to come on when you have your headlights on on a 66 GTO. It's the one thing that's always bugged me about the 66 Goats. And if anyone knows, how do you wire it up..... I'm no auto electrician.
Thanks.

i really like the look of the parking lights when the headlights are on also and mine stay on....but i cant remember what i did if anything to make that happen. i remember when i had a 64 malibu the parking lights would turn off when the headlights were on and i simply found the run on wire for the parking lights and piggy backed it onto the head light run on wire at the headlight switch. i think i did the same thing to the pontiac. i will crawl under my dash of the pontiac tomorrow and take a look at what wires were cut and piggy backed onto what. i ll try to get a pic or 2 aswell.

parking lights should work on low beams and only go off with the brights

on the topic of headlights...i also wired up a relay so that you will never accidentally leave your headlights on and come back to a dead battery. let me know if any one is interested in that wiring diagram.

I thank you for the link 6t7gto, and to everyone else too. And thanks to you too Ctgross for the directions reference if you happen to look in here. ~S!~

I was talking to a guy today and he said to install a 30 amp diode but never said where and what for. I never got to ask as we were sidetracked by someone else with a problem on their old car and I had to leave. For some reason it sounded kinda dumb as I thought it might be a simple cut and splice, tho I didn't know where to do it. I've now got the instructions copied to a safe place on my computer.

Nothing looks sweeter than the parkinglights on with the headlights on on a GTO.

Couldnt agree more but.... how do you manage with turn blinkers if parking lights are always on?? just make them blink and keep on when you are done turning???

Parking lights are for parking, I'd rather be driving

the bulbs have 2 elements..one for turn signal and a seperate one for the constant parking light.

Hey Vic, I'd like that diagram for the relay so that you don't accidentally leave the headlights on. Send it in an email if you want or attack it here in a jpg photo to download. Thanks.

I remember years ago J.C. Whitney sold a little trick that was installed in the headlight wiring to accomplish this trick. Don't know if they still carry it or not.

pretty simple really. i just bought a relay at the parts store...you know the ones with a 30, 87, 87a, 86 and 85 numbered terminals.

i just cut the large red wire with a white stripe at the headlight switch.

the red/white wire coming out of the headlight goes to the #87 terminal (use an extension of the same gauge wire. that way the relay is easier to get to if it fails)

the other end of the red white stripe wire coming from like the firewall area goes to the #30 terminal.

the #85 terminal goes to a ground

the #86 terminal goes to a 12V source when the ignition is ON only. i used a male terminal at the fuse block. (the most lower right corner, just above the fuse box mounting bolt)

the 87a terminal doesn't get used.

basically, when you turn on your ignition the 12 volts sent to the #86 terminal closes (connects) the red/white stripe wire that you cut sending power to turn your headlights turning them on ONLY when you have your headlight switch pulled to the on position. if you have the headlight switch pushed in your lights will be off....and if you accidentally leave your lights on...when you turn your car off the relay will open (disconnect) the red/white wire cutting the power to your headlights. then when you go back and start your car your headlights will come on....geez, i hope im not mastering the obvious with you guys.

i keep an extra relay in my center console. they are under 5 bucks. i have been running the same relay for years now with no problem. im not sure how many times it has saved my battery but i know it has.

i hope that helps.

just wondering if anyone has tried the headlight wire relay??? if you havent i forgot to mention that the RED/WHITE wire that you have to cut will be HOT as in 12 volts always running through it so be careful when splicing and crimping. cheers

I haven't had a chance to get a relay yet Vic for one reason. You wouldn't happen to have a part number would you for that? The parts guy at my local parts store had a hissy fit when I asked with the numbers you gave for the terminals. He is a royal PITA.

I put a power diode between the low beam light and the parking light circuit. Under the front fender by the battery on drivers side. The diode lets the power go from headlights to light the parking lights but not in reverse when parking lights only are on. Works when high beams are on also.
