hydra matic question
Hi
What part is this? I did find it in the transmissions pan on my 56 Pontiac Starchief. I couldn't find any picture of this part in my 55 hydra matic manual. Maybe it's special for 56?

It looks like part of a snap ring that broke off and got caught somewhere before it ended up in the pan!
Do you have a Dual Coupling Hydramatic? If your shifter has a Park position, you do. If you do, it is most likely the snap ring from the coupling cover.

hard to say. I think Stevep called it on this one. Sure hope it a dual range Hydro as nobody i know will go naer a 56-64 BOPC tranny. Your tranny needs to be taken apart and rebuilt before more damage is done. as the parts are hard to find. compitent mechanics even harder to find. If you had recent work done on the tranny that will happen if you reuse snap rings. But again if parts are not available whatcha gonna do? might consider buying a few cores and some service manuals.
You dont want to drive it. Its better to know than to hope. Start shoppin around now for parts, spares manuals and help. |

Hi
And thanks for the answers. It has park, so it have to be a dual range. The trans works OK. But if it is the snap ring from the coupling cover, it is a lot of work too replace it and do I need a lot of gaskets, parts, too do this job?

Actually, if the trans works OK, you can remove the trans, take the torus and the bell housing off and remove the coupling. Once you slide the coupling out, you will see the snap ring. There was an updated snap ring that would not blow off, as many did. So the only thing that you would need is a snap ring, a bellhousing Oring and fluid but the main issue is, if the trans hasn't been overhauled in many years, it needs it anyway.
You have Park, so you have a Dual Coupling, not a Dual Range. We rebuild both units at my shop.

Hi Stevep
And thanks for the answers. I am going to sell this car to finance a car to drive around with in the USA, as I am going to be there for 7 weeks this summer. So I will maybe sell this car as it is. But do you sell this parts, that I need to do this job?

There is a friend of mine named Dave Edwards who sells parts. He has a website. It may be www.autotran.us or something like that. It has been posted here before.
