Default 84 Trans Am Recaro....

are they of any value? I'm not really familiar with the 3rd generation market, so i was curious if this car is rare are has anything of value on it? There is one in a junk yard about an hour and a half away, that's why i ask. It looks like it still has quite abit of usuable parts. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Damian.

Should have the adjustable Recaro seats, disc brake rear?, heavy sway bars, & possibly cold air induction hood. Dave K.

There where 1,321 Recaro T/As made in 1984. They are all well optioned and the only '82-84 T/A to come in a monotone paint scheme(all black!) The '84s are pretty rare but 3rd-gens are still dirt cheap. I decent car would be worth somewhere around $2-3000 with a very clean car maybe getting around $5,000 if the RIGHT buyer comes along. A junkyard special I can't see being worth more than $500. You could always pick it up and part it out as it will have all the nicer performance and luxery options that people are always looking for. I'd like to get my hands on some of the L69 5.0L HO engine and exhaust parts to upgrade the base LG4 5.0L in my '84 T/A.

It has the recaro seats. They will need recovered though. It has a disc rear. Are there any other parts that i should check to see if they are there? Any idea on prices? Thanks for the replies, Damian.

I can't remember if it is four speed or not. I'm in CT. I may see it again this weekend. Damian.

An '84 T/A is going to have a hydraulic clutch setup and a Borg-Warner T5 transmission. If you were thinking you could use some of the parts for a A/G-Body manual trans swap you need to look for an '82-83 Firebird/Crapmaro. That was the years the F-body used a mechanical clutch pedal setup and some of the parts are shared with the A/G-body.

acgwinn, if you can sneak a digital camera into the yard take some pics.

No, actually the 4 speed was standard and the 5 speed was optional. I have an 84 recaro with the 4 speed and it's linkage activated..

Thats a negative. Take a look at the option and parts book. The BW T5 was the standard and only manual transmission available on the T/A beginning in 1983. 1982 was the last year for a 4-speed Trans Am and depending on the factory and build time the car either got a BW-ST10 or Saginaw 4-speed(Saginaw is by far the most common). The BW T4 4-speed was available with the Iron Duke 4-cyl cars starting in 1983 with the T5 being an upgrade.

1982-83 used a mechanical clutch pedal setup with a Z-bar. The bell housing was borrowed from the A/G parts bin. 1984 was the first year for the hydraulic clutch pedal setup and remained mostly unchanged until the end of the 3rd-gen in 1992.

If you have a '84 Recaro T/A with a 4-speed then there has been some serious mickey mouse swaping going on. Hell, there were hardly any "options" to speak of on the Y84 Recaro. It came standard loaded up everything just like the Aniversary cars.

Anyway ... it should be interesting see this poor Recaro T/A sitting in a junkyard if acgwinn is able to take some pictures.

Just doubled checked the Firebird transmission usage chart to refresh my memory. The M24 Borg Warner Super T-10 4-speed(3.42 first gear version) and M26 Saginaw 4-speed where put behind the LG4 carburated V8 in 1982 only. The M26 Saginaw 4-speed was also used with the Iron Duke 4-cyl and 2.8L V6 in 1982. From 1983-85 the 4-speed transmission used was the M08 Borg Warner 77mm T4 transmission and only with the Iron Duke 4-cyl. From 1983 on the Borg Warner T5 77mm 5-speed was the only manual trans put behind V6 and V8 applications. The T5 5-speed was an upgrade for the Iron Duke from 1983-85 and only manual trans available in 1986.

The GM master parts book also supports mechanical clutch linkage for '82-83 and hydraulic for '84-92. My '84 Firebird service manual also only shows diagrams and repair instructions for the hydraulic setup.

Starting in 1984 Pontiac began putting a Service Parts Identification(SPID) label on the underside of the center console glove box lid that lists all the RPO codes for the major parts and options the car came with. It comes in real handy to see what the car originally had and if there are any cool options that may be installed when looking at a car in a junkyard. Always double check the VIN number on the label to make sure it matches the one on the car as the console lid could have been swapped.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but the 4 speed WAS available on the 84's. See for yourself..

My car is the 4th owner and never has been "mickey moused"

Drivetrain

Transmissions: 4-speed manual (82-84), 5-speed manual (83-92), 3-speed automatic (82-83), 4-speed overdrive automatic (84-92)
Steering: recirculating ball (power assisted)
Brakes: front discs/rear drums; all-disc brakes optional (standard on high-performance models)

I'm not trying to start a pissing match here. I never denied that there was NO 4-speed manual transmission in '84, just that it was not behind a V8 in 1984 anymore. A 4-speed manual was availble from 82-85. In 1982 behind ALL engines and 1983-85 behind the Iron Duke 4-cyl only. This info is from GM documention, not heresay off the internet or a webpage.

Since you have an '84, it will be clearly marked what tranmission the car came with. What are the "Mxx" RPO codes on the SPID label underneath the console lid? You better find M24, M26, or M08 to be a factory 4-speed. You also should find L69(5.0L HO V8), WS4(Trans Am), Y84(Recaro Special Edition), and AQ9(Recaro seats).

WOW. What a sad looking Recaro T/A. Its amazing how a car that cost $17,000 in 1984 can end up looking like that. It looks like that junkyard has a very nice selection of F-bodies.

It looks like most of the L69 HO stuff is still there. I see the stock large opening exhaust manifolds and I would assume the sewer pipe size Y-pipe and catylatic converter are still there. It still has the L69 8 grand tach and 80 psi oil pressure gauge. The L69 computer and PROM is worth grabbing. I also would definetely get the Recaro seats.

I can't tell since there is a leaf in the way but does it have power mirrors? It also looks like the console lid is in surprisingly good shape. Normally they start to pull away around release button. Did you by chance get a picture of the SPID label with all the RPO codes under the lid?

How is the top padded dash board? I don't think I see any cracks. I need one of my '84 since it started to crack from the defroster openings a couple years ago.

The car is like an hour away, so i can't answer those questions yet. I'm thinking about grabbing the whole car. In your opinion, what would you offer for it as is? I appreciate your input. Thanks, Damian.

The car looks pretty trashed. I don't see a single good body panel and judging by the rust on the quarter panel it probably has some rust issues underneath the car. There are still a lot of good parts on the car but you still don't want to get too much money into it given the current value of 3rd-gens in general right now. I would first try offering them around $200 which would be about the price for scrap and go up to $400, maybe $500 if you really want the car.

I would love to get a set of Recaros out of a 1984 Recaro TA, but man, those are shot to sh*t.
Too bad.
Too bad the whole car looks so bad as well.
Those were really nice cars when new.

The knee pad on the side of the console is a hard to find part. What about the front bumper inserts, I think most were the vented type not sure though. Dave K.
