cam breakin ?
I have read many threads on this and Hands book. I have one small question is the above 2000rpm for 20minutes a steady or varing above 2000rpm? I.E. cycling from 2to 2.5to3rpm. or steady as close as possible to 2000rpm? thanks Rod.

It should be changed from 2000 to 2800 to vari the oil spray pattern so that the full lenght of the cam gets good oil coverage.
You should be using a non- detergent oil for brake in. I even go so far as heating up the last few quarts of oil in the microwave before I add it to the crankcase.

20 minutes minimum and if you can keep temps in control 30 minutes would be better. keep the rpm above 2000. I vary the speed myself keeping between 2-3000 rpm (avg 2500). With inner springs removed you could(depending on cam and spring combo) be near valve float at 3000 rpm so be careful.

So what do you do if you don't have a tach?

Buy a tach. You should have an oil pressure gauge too.

I mounted (with Ty Wraps)a temp and oil pressure gage to the cowl wehn I broke in my motor. It was nice being able to see what's going on without having to look inside at the dash.

drive it?
What about just driving it during that time?
I'm pretty close to the freeway... thinking why waste gas and ignore my neighbors, in 20 minutes, I can be on the beach!

That was meant to be funny right? Just drive it? If by some chance you were seriously asking that question. The answer is no,never, nunca, nada,! That woud be not very nice!

The reason you don't want to drive it is the goal is to break the engine in under a no-load condition. Since the cam problems have become so plentiful, I have went to a 20 minute cycle, 20 minute cool down with engine off, and then one additional 20 minute run exactly the same as the first. We've done the last three cam break-ins that way and they're still spinning along. My reasoning is it gives the cam a full extra cycle to polish contact areas before exposing it to the real world.
