Breathing Life into a Tired Darksider
Okay everyone,
I haven't said much until now, but the new project for Clearcreek Restorations is here. I bought the car from Steve at Pontiac Heaven in Phoenix, AZ, and let me tell you, this old girl as A LOT of life left in her. I don't have all the documentation, but it was built the 2nd week of January, originally the Sunfire Red poly, power windows, power antenna, trunk release, and maybe power seat (I have to wait on PHS documentation) After cleaning it, which included a pressure wash, it looks like about 3 hours of sheet metal work in the trunk and the rest is easy. It has the 25K Bonneville motor with the super hydro trans. It's missing the diff carrier and some trim, so I may be hitting you guys up for contacts for nice trim pieces. Anyway, before it goes on the website (mine), I thought I'd post here first. The car will be for sale when finished. Thanks all, -r-

Hmmmmmm, that car looks familar! he he
I am glad the car went to you Ron. It was also a pleasure dealing with you on it too. I am sure you will make her better than she ever has been. I hope you are pleased with it. Looking forward to meeting you in person. I realize it is pretty loaded already but, are you planning on adding any more options? How about colors? Going with the original I assume? looks like a solid project ron. i like the rattle can white paint on it now. i'd be curious as to how many time's she's been sprayed due to the sun baking the paint off of her.someone went to a LOT of trouble unless that teal was the orig interior color. [which i doubt but i've seen stranger things]
my 65 gto, which was built in cali, then traveled to nevada, then tx [iirc], then fla and tn before coming up here had 5 coats on her + the original paint. i hope your wasn't blessed so many times by earl schieb! have fun with her, mike

Jeff,
My partner and I are going to flip a quarter for the steering wheel.... It's a real classic, isn't it? As far as the car goes, we have it stripped and will pull the body tomorrow. I hope to have it to the dippers by begining next week so they can do their thing while I'm in Germany. Anyway, Steve won't recognize the car when he shows up here in the next week or two. I'll post more pic tomorrow hopefully. -r-

Jeez Ron! you don't wast any time, do you??
no support beam between the front and rear door jambs? seems like the A-body set always does that... |

Matt,
Supports are there between front and rear door jams, you just have to look close to see them (right side only in first pic) We've got 17 man hours to this point. The tear down is easy, it's putting it back together that takes forever and a Sunday. -r-

Looks like fun. I will one day separate the body from the frame on my car. It is the commitment to not driving to for a long while is the part that scares me. I will have to save up a ton of cash so I can move quickly on the project.

And for those of you who have been keeping up, if you remember when my truck took a dump on I-70 taking it over to Indy, well, it did the same thing at the same place.
-r- you really need to get that truck looked at. i hope your sugery went well. mike

Beautiful work, Ron.
Looks like it is coming right along. I like the pix of the floor pan on the rotiessere - very solid. Jim

Ron,
Do you think its possible to change the rubber body bushings without removing the body from a 64? I always wanted to do this to get that new car feeling back. Thanks for the picts. |

Jeff,
To answer your question:no. You'd have to lift the body . It could be done, but would take a few days. The dog house would have to be removed. You'd need to lift the body about 6" - 9" to get them in and out around the frame/floor pan side rails. They actually "plug" into the frame. Patrick, I'll be fixing your "scratch" here in the next week or so - and don't do that again.... Although I did get a bit behind schedule. Miranda and I spend a week in Siesta Key with the boys (see picture - view from our condo ) -r-

Thanks Ron...
I didn't word my question well. I realize I have to lift the body off the frame rails. I plan on doing it in the dead of winter while I have my car up in the air for maintenance. |

Ron, Are you planning on re-doing the rocker chrome.
I've been thinking about removing mine. I picked up all the rocker chrome from a 64 Star Chief that was being parted out here at P-Y. When I received the package, I couldn't get over the excellent shape it was in! I always liked to clean look of the 63s. Last edited by PITTSBURGH 64; 02-17-2008 at 07:06 PM. |
