Which TH400 trans will fit in a 78 TA? A long or short tail? Thanks for any advice.

Switched a 4-speed over to a short shaft 400 once. Think we had to move the crossmember back, drill new holes in the frame, driveshaft was a bolt in.

That's what I was wanting to do. That would be great if I can reuse the driveshaft. Pitch

There are at least three trans possibilities.
TH400 Short 32 spline TH400 Long 32 Spline TH400 Long 27 spline Any could work, the short was OEM for 70-74 The 27 spline is mid/late 70's and probably not as strong as the 32 spline. Unless you currently have a 71-81 4 speed, you will need to shorten your driveshaft. If you have a TH350 now, you will need to change your yoke uless you use the 27 spline TH400. I believe the 78 OEM crossmember is the same as the 70-74 TH400 except it has one slot versus two for the tranny mount. I have a repro TH400 x-member for sale in case your interested, pm me.
