Default Time For New Drag Radials

Last year we changed from the BFG drag radials to M/T's on the Firebird and the car hooked better and 60 foot times dropped. We're right on the line and maybe once out of a half dozen passes the tires will break loose. If we could find just a little more stick, it would really help. I notice that the market is getting crowded with Hoosier, M&H and Goodyear all introducing their own drag radials. Have the competing brands been out long enough to form opinions?

Just curious, how many runs did you get out of the MT's? Mine are down to the little wear bands in the tread after apprx 12 quarter mile runs, has me wondering, is there much life left in them? -Jim

Question

Messin with DR's for quite awhile. I don't know of any big heavy hitters not running M/T's.

What are your 60 ft'ers and ET?

You might need to change your setup as people have been 1.27 with a 7.49 ET (stock type suspension)with M/T Drag radials.

Jim,

I was able to get 66 full passes out of mine. I ran them until there was no tread. FWIW, they seemed to hook better the more I ran them.

Mick,

What size DR are you using? I crew for my buddy of mine, who has a blow-thru set-up (1100hp motor), and can tell you that when we used a 275 M/T DR there wasn't enough roll-out to keep the tire planted. We experienced the same ordeal as you. Coincidently, we got our best 60 ft. ever (1.254), but the tire was too inconsistent. Switched back to a 295 M/T DR and the car was consistent 1.28-1.30 and got alot more consistent hook. He usually averages about 80-100 passes before he gets a new set.

I'm in the market for bigger/better tires to replace my faithful Hoosier 9.0X30X15 radial slicks. They can't handle this Gaydosh IAII 508" !!! I have done all short of back halfing
this boat...
What is the real world width of the MT ET Street radilas/295-65R15 ??
Have seen 10" and 10.9" ???
How do these bite on a HEAVY car ??
Thanks
Troy

Troy,

The car I mentioned was 3400#. Here's the link to M/T web-site and it gives all the specs to the DR.

I've gotten 1,000 miles and 50 runs from my M/T 275/60/15 radials thus far, and they look to have about 1/2 the life left. 1.52 60 foot off them off the transbrake without a hint of spin, but on a greasy summer track they have been inconsistent on mine as well as a few others that drag race with me. The 295/65/15 depending on rim can be close to 11-11.5" wide. I know they won't fit under a stock Nova wheelhouse without a ton of "massaging"

We are running the 275/60x15 on a 8.5" rim and made 60 runs before they were down to the cord. The life was cut shorter than it should have by my son being a little over-enthusiastic in the water box - next pair we'll limit that - especially since he will be buying the tires Wasn't totally his fault since he was being coached by Jerry "The Judge" Young and Jerry taught him to stay in the box until they were smokin' good. At least we got some great pictures for the garage wall.

The Firebird's setup is a 3.89 9" with aftermarket multi-leaf springs and traction bars with the stop located right on the front eyelet. The car lifts 3" front and rear on launch, and there is some discussion whether we should aim for less lift in the rear. Mark and his Firebird were in the September HPP Shootout, and there is a good picture the car leaving the line. The car was set up to run in the Pontiac Drag Days Trophy class so there was no use in making the car faster at the time. Now that LACR is history (and PDD for now) we might as well kick things up a notch.

It looks like the other manufactures might have one-upped MT with their new offerings. I can see that Hoosier has added about an inch wider tread on all their DR's, and M&H at least looks great.

Jeff Kinsler runs the Hoosier DR and has had some good success with them.

i feel that the MTs are misrepresented to the general public. yea of course the are drag radials but they hook like regular slicks AND wear out as fast for us guys who think " hey new drag radial on the market that works better than the BFs" but what they dont tell you is that if you drive them on the street , as i do, you will be buying 2 pairs a year. same as their ET streets. i got almost 2 years 5000 and about 75 passes on my BFs and resold them for 75$ when i was done. also people ,before MTs came out, were going 8s and i think i even heard high 7s on BFs. but thats a whole other topic.... actually take that back. their not misrepresented because MT doesnt actually say "daily street usage will result in you giving us your money again faster than you probably thought" marketing genius!!!

I run these Troy on an 8" rim, the section width is 12" and I can measrue the contact width for you. Keep in mind the section width will narrow as the rim width increases.

That's about what MT's web site says they should be...11.9" on 8" rim...
If no problem I would like a real wold tread spec...
Thanks

The tire section width will increase by about .4" for every 1" of additional rim width.

A lot of folks have the misconception that the wider rim, since it creates less visible sidewall bulge, narrows the section width. That's not true.

I'm looking hard at staying with MT and going to their 325/50R15 as the replacement for the 275/60R15. Basically the same size, just wider with specs of 27.9" diameter, tread width of 11.0", and section width of 13". The recommended wheel width for the tire is 9" to 12", and our rims are 8.5" wide. Shouldn't be any problem being a half-inch shy? Plenty of room for the wider tire so that won't be an issue.

I stand corrected, I reread the info from which I based my opinion and it does not say more or less but a simple google search revealed that the section width increases .2" for every 1/2" of rim width added.
