Default Curious - What did You Pay For Your Engine Build?

Getting ready to send another motor off and I'm curious what the average price is for a street / strip motor (9.5 compression, good head work, etc) assuming the block, crank, heads, etc check good?

Thanks!
Mark

for me ( hope the wife does not see this )

Shortblock bought from py member 2200
offset with new rods it came with and sold a crank -800
Heads bought from PY member (Jim Yanoski prepped) 1100
RPM bought from PY 125
Machine work and all parts needed, pistons, pins, gaskets, cam
lifters, pushrods/guides/oil pump, timing chain, flowed heads, dist, plugs,
some hardware, carb (ebay), check all tolerances, balance,
final hone a +35 , dyno time 5500

8100

I'm not sure mine qulaifes for a street rebuild. It is a high quality street/strip rebuild by a very reputiable local machinist who stands by his work.

Holy Moly, I must be a "CHEAP" bast........! You guys are spending $6000.00 to $8100.00 just on the engine. Hmmmm, I can account for everything carb to oil pan on my 406 and it only comes to $3,327.00

My largest "Big ticket item" are the 1968 #16 heads, total to date cost $1200.00

I do have some future upgrades that will raise the cost $1000.00

I have to show this stuff to my wife, so she can stop complaining about how much I spend! This here is good stuff! JD

My price included, comp full roller rockers, several hours of carb work, break in time, full stud kit, many dyno pulls and some tuning.

He gave me price on parts prices within 10% of summit.

Hi,
$300 for a 1970 YH 455 complete.
$3667 for a long block rebuild.
New pistons for 9.34:1 compression, lots of work on the heads to include screw in studs,
1.77" exhaust valves, hardened seats, pushrod holes elongated for 1.65:1 rockers. XE-268 cam, lifters, springs, valve stem seals, polylocks, bearings, gaskets, oil pump, tanked, magnafluxed, turned crank journals, boring 0.030" over, reconditioning the connecting rods, block decked, chambers CC'ed, balancing, etc. Carb and dist were worked on by CliffR and SunTuned previously.
Installed a Pypes 2.5" X-Pipe complete exhaust system.
Not a monster engine, but great for my needs.
Mike

Default This one will cost.....

.....around 10K by the time it's done.

1969 400 2-bolt main, stock 400 N crank, +.030 Ross pistons, Eagle 6.625" rods, ATI Super Damper.

Out-of-the-box 72cc E-heads, bathtub tunnel ram with two 575cfm 1966 Pontiac Carter AFBs. HO Racing Tri-Y headers, RobbMc 550HP mechanical fuel pump.

Undecided on cam, will be running 1.65 Crower stainless roller rockers.

By the time you buy all the stuff to make it come together, it adds up to more than you'd think. Plus I paid stupid money for the intake.

No $400-500 fabricated valve covers though.

Less than $4K for my pump gas 455. That was carb to oil pan. For the race gas 467, I stopped counting the receipts when they got to $8K.

Default 428

Had a 428 built by greg merrick for 10500 give or take and it was worth it at twice the price. The attention paid to detail by this man is scary....oh yeah, so is the motor. When the motor arrived it was perfectly jetted and ready to run! Cant wait to take on the 572 bowties!

stopped counting at 5 g's..........a well built motor with good parts ain't "cheap"...

a good core is gonna set most people back 500-1000 to start with....... add a good set of light pistons at 500.00 good rods at 400-600 a good set of heads at 1200-2000......you are down 3-4 g's before you can blink an eye......and thats without one ounce of machine work......

I have 1500-2000 out of my pocket in mine including machine work, doing the assembly myself. The 3500 insurance check from e-bay due to the motor comming with a spun bearing helped a lot.

I will let you know once I get mine back from the Dude, hopefully before it snows

Paid $500.00 for a 400 block, Dude will 30 over and stroke it to a 455, if it runs good (and I got bucks) I will install a blower (over this or next winter). With the blower and installation help I expect to be close to 10 grand.

Its only money: I don't drink, I don't do drugs, I don't gamble...........wait a minute I HAVE NO LIFE!!!!.........oh wait a minute I do have my car and sex and food (maybe not in that exact order).............that will do

Speed is like a crack habit, and asking for totals is like reminding someone how much they need therapy!

I had the block, bought a stroker assbly for 1900 to my door with a couple odds & ends (pump, gaskets, etc). Machine work was about 600, carb, intake, pan, etc, @1k. So what's that, 3500 or so? Pump gas street engine, won't even start on the blower engine! I will need therapy if I did! Oh, then I added e-heads, forgot about that, tack on 2300....
