Default Shocks for my 62 Cat

Upgrading the suspension a bit on my 62 Catalina. Just ordered a rear sway bar from Fabcraft. Now needing to locate new shocks. No problem finding shocks for the front, but can anybody let me know a good source for the rear shocks? Do not want air shocks. Thanks

i just checked my carquest shock book [ kyb] and they don't list a rear for your car.

if you can get one of the rears off and get me some measurements i might be able to match something up for you. my local manager printed me out a spec sheet when i was hunting shocks for my 65 g/p.

i put KYB KG5438 in the rear of my '61. not sure if your height & travel is the same or similar, but these travel from 13.9" to 21.8". with new stock HD rear springs from Ames, my rear sits just over 20". these worked great for me. hope this helps.

I have Bilstines and love them!
The wagon shock will fit the hardtop.

Bilsteins are great shock absorbers, but I'm not sure there's an application that will fit. 58-62 big cars used a different shock than later years, although I'm not sure what the difference was.

Might be the solid upper control arm bushings on the 62.

The front shocks are the same as later cars all the way till 1970, it's the rear shocks that are different somehow on 1962 and earlier cars.

Thats weird, the rear ends, frames, springs and control arms are the same.

One thing about the Blistines, you will need to swap out there cheep course thread rear shock studs, mine lasted 100 miles before becoming loose. Getting that rubber bushing and stud all in at once is a job, I set everything up in my vise and kept spraying wd on it while I slowly tightened the vise.
The small studs make me thing they were made for smaller cars. But mine work great. My car has less body bounce then a BMW.

I tried the KYBs and they leaked after 500 miles.

Was thumbing through Kanter catalog last night and noticed they offered gas shocks for my 62. Does anybody know if these are quality shocks?

iwas in the hollanders this morning and looked up the interchange on these shocks.

big pontiac rear shocks are 61-2 specific per the interchange.

take the kyb number the monkey posted to carquest and have them source or cross reference it. kyb is the brand they just switched their stock to, they will be able to get it.

I just replaced all my Kanter front end parts, they lasted a whole year!

I would do some research on the shocks. There are some very high quality shocks out there now. These heavy cars with soft springs need a good quality shock. I would look into a Koni or something of that caliber.

Mike, the one's I had did do a good job but they started leaking, from what I understand KYB fixed this problem, this was a few years ago this happened to me.
I'm sorry if I sounded like I was bashing KYB, I didn't mean to.
I hope you have excellent results with there shocks.

no offense taken jeff, from the listings or lack thereof, i found for the 62 pontiac he's down to taking what he can find.

kyb builds 70-80 % of the oem shocks / struts installed on new cars in production today. the ones i bought carry a lifetime warranty if i'm not mistaken. so if they leak they get replaced.

i know i'll have good luck with them one way or another, i've got a partsman who covers my butt when i have problems.

just noticed your post here at w--k. i have a set of 3 way adjustable shocks off my 62 cat i'll sell cheap. they came off my drag car so they could be too firm. can't remember who made them but it was an old time manufacturer and i got them from nunzi 2-3 years ago. definatly not alot of milage. i think the settings are regular, firm, extra firm i'd have to look. i bought kybs for my 61 from sumitt i still have in the box so if you want numbers let me know. i have kybs on my 68 goat for years and love em and the price for the quality you get.

If you have any suspension questions, send Gerry Hulsey an email. This guy is awesome and has done some amazing things with stock suspension. For you best shock choice, I'd contact Gerry gerbear7@juno.com

What did you end up with? Mine needs rear springs and shocks. I WANT air in the rear. The wagon could use it.

Thanks,
Dave

Dave, if you go with air shocks, plumb each side separately!

I will, but why?..... I am curious. is it an exhaust burning the line thing? Or is it that these cars usually get lop-sided due to inconsistent air pressure?

Whos should I use? Gabriel Sky-Jackers?
