Default 68 Firebird and Doug's Headers

My wife and I have a 68 Firebird that were building another 455 for it. Were going to use 6X heads done by SD Performance. It is also going to have a TH400 in it..

The steering box is really close on the drivers side. I'm wondering about fit problems.

I know some of you are running Doug's headers on your 68 F/B.. If possible can one of you send me a pic with the headers installed by the steering box.

Also tell me if you had any problem installing them and the size you went with.

You could post here or email me dirrectly @ chuckies@shaw.ca

Thank you. Charles

Here are some shots of the install we did on Jim Wangers' Project Greenbird...a '67 Firebird. The install is of DOUG'S HEADERS and a Pypes Exhaust.

Thanks Dave, I really appreciate that. Anyone have a pic of the driver and passenger side, especially where the power steering is located..

Thanks Charles

I've got the Dougs on my '68. Not to hijack your thread, but I'll share my experience:

The driver side had to drop the starter for the install. Also had to loosen the driver side motor mount and jack the engine about 1". Not a big deal. Have good clearance on this side. Everything tucks up under or even with the subframe and decent clearance to the steering box. I am running lowering spring and have no issues with bottoming out. My pitman arm ended up hitting one of the tubes, but it's a straight arm, not curved (I believe mine's incorrect--Not Doug's fault).

On the passenger side I ended up having to loosen the motor mount and lift the engine in addition to taking out the oil filter housing. The tubes/collectors again tuck up even with the subframe.

I think I have a problem w/mine as one of the tubes ended up resting against the fuel line alone the frame rail and I had do slightly divert the fuel line. I also have clearance issues with my oil filter (tried 2 different types) as well as not lining up on the hump in the transmission (T400) cross member. I've also not been able to get a good seal on this side even though I've tried 3 different sets of gaskets. It's time for me to talk w/Doug's about a return.

Mine's actually up on jack stands so I just took these tonight.

Wayne

Thank you Wayne, Just what I was looking for. I have read your other post about your problems with the headers not lining up with the cross member..

Make sure you let us know how you make out with this issue.

Thanks for taking the time to post the pics.. Can you send me a pic of the pitman arm touching the header or post it..

Thanks Wayne.

I have a 67 bird with a 326ci and th400. I installed Headman headers this spring. These headers fit perfect. Very easy install, no denting, bending or tweaking.

We had no such problems with our install. We did install new mounts on the TH400 and engine when we put things together. The last picture in my first post displays the proper pitman arm.

Roadrage...the 1 7/8 Doug's round port headers have the same ground clearance as the Doug's D-ports do.

O-ports are all 1 7/8" tubes with 3 1/2" collectors from Doug's. We are pushing 650 in the Tiger and they work fine. Unless you have more than 500 cu. in. you do not need 2 " primaries. Others will beg to differ...but that is my opinion based upon dyno testing performed at Vrbancic Bros Dyno.

I'm going to keep this thread going because I was in discussions just today with Doug's/Petronix about sending my header back to them. They state there are no other complaints of clearance with the smaller filter. I was going to send it back to them to compare to others to verify if something is wrong with mine or not. I would think so because no matter what car this was in or how my motor mounts were set, my clearance issue with the header to the oil filter.

t did not dawn on me that there are 45 degree & 90 degree adapters. In all the countless posts I've read on the topic, everyone talks about what headers & filters they have, but not which adapter.

I've got the 45 degree adapter and here are some shots I took tonight with a NAPA 1522 filter ('02 Tahoe filter) I tried as it was a little smaller than the 1045 Caddy filter. Trying to slip in on it barely hits and cannot make it onto the threads of the housing. I had to take the adapter off to slip it in for these pictures.

So here are the questions:

-Would a 90 degree adapter give me the clearance I need?
-Is the 90 degree adapter shorter than the 45 degree thus give more clearance in
length to the bottom of the collector?
-What's everyone else running in theirs where they do not have clearance issues?

When Doug's recommends the small filter it is the LS1 filter. That filter is shorter than the filter you are using. I know your next question will be about the size being adequate for the old Pontiac. My reply is that the newer engines run higher temps and longer between recommended oil changes without incident.

The attached shows our use of a 90 degree housing and the filter hanging about the header.

Big thanks Dave!

When I talked w/Doug's--Petronix, they did not know which smaller filter to suggest.

I pulled up the dimensions of the LS1 filter (NAPA 1042) and compared to the Tahoe Filter (NAPA 1522) the LS1 is 1.122 inches shorter & same diameter.
I'll give this a try tonight.

Wayne
