Hello, I have a YA code 455 and the code by the distributor is H247. Can anybody tell me what year this engine is from? I know the YA code 455's were used in 1970-1973 but I am trying to find out what year mine is from.
Any help is appreciated. |

One of your numbers are wrong, the date you list, they wasnt any 455's in 1977 (H24 1977), if its right then its 1967 (H24 1967), that would make your YA a 400.

Thanks for your help 455_regal, I checked the engine again and the date code I gave was correct which unfortunetely means that somewhere along the line the original 455 was yanked out and replaced with a 1977 pontiac 350. This makes the drivetrain in the 71 catalina I have worth a whole lot less but I at least I know what to look for next time. Thanks.

A H247 date code would have meant it was for a '68 or '78 model year. And, if you're saying 1977, would make it a 400 out of a Firebird. '68 would be a 400 out a Grand Prix or full-size Pontiac. How is the block mounted to the motor mounts?

77 350, should have this number behind the pass head on the block. 488986

Ok, here we go... The engine is a YA code, the date code is confirmed H247, the number behind the passenger side cylinder head is 500557. I was also able to make out the numbers at the vin stamp location and they were 28N108749. The block is mounted to the motor mounts by two bolts on each side but the mounts are a lot longer than the ones on my 69 gto. Any answers to as to the year and displacement of this pontiac block are much appreciated.

Thanks again guys for the verification, it looks as though the engine was misrepresented as a 455 when my brother bought the car. I also noticed tonight when I was under the car that on the driver side of the block it looks as though a 3 digit casting number has ben ground off. It makes me wonder if this was the casting of the displacement.
