Maybe you have a piece of trash in your needle/seat?

When I started my 2bbl after a fresh rebuild, I left out the brass filter. It ran rich and idled like crap. I put the fuel filter in and it smoothed right out. This also happend to me when I put my Q-jet on. Without the fuel filter, it didn't run right. I think they do help regulate the fuel.

A fuel filter might limit flow but not pressure. As the floats reach the top the volume drops to almost nothing, but the pressure then builds. Three or four filters in a row won't stop excess pressure so I would say your problem is elsewhere. What probably happened is without the filter some junk went into the carb and held open the needle valve.

Perhaps the filters smooth out the pressure pulses from the pump so the needle and seat don't "see" the pulses.

Don't overlook the above suggestion that there may be trash in the needle valve assembly even if new. Replaced my fuel line and even tho I blew it out with compressed air and ran carb cleaner thru it there was still trash in the line.
Good luck

ok pulled the carb off.. half of the rubber gasket of the accelerator pump was stuck to the carb wall,, think that would have been causing the problem?
