Default Manual Steering Strike Two

Folks,

I have asked questions and gotten answers and either I am stupid (very possible actually) or just missing something.

I have a 1974 Firebird I want to convert to manual steering.

First I was told a 1st gen manual box would work. Got one without pitman arm. Pitman arm wont interchange. Rag joint is different.

Then I was told that a mid 80s S-10 manual box would work. I was told that I would have to use my current pitman arm. Got the box, swapped the pitman arm, rag joint doesn't fit. It is a much different diameter. I checked around and so far have not found a listing for a rag joint for the S-10 box. I am being told that it used a shaft with u-joint instead of a rag joint.

Can someone who has actually done this mod PM me and help me see the light? This old man would be forever grateful.

D Scruggs,

You need the lower half of the steering shaft from the donor S-10. The part where the two halves slide into each other is what you need to use. Simply slide lower half from S-10 onto upper half of F-Body and you are finished...Robert 10851man@gmail.com

Try Desert Valley Auto in AZ,or Hidden Valley in AZ also.I got my manual box from DV complete with pitman arm years ago. They may have what you need.
Also try Borgeson Universal. They are in my neck of the woods, and I was talkin to them at a trade show, and was told that they have all new stuff for the P/S to manual swap.

I may have stumbled across an answer.

According to a document on the Flaming River website (Thanks Mike) The 1977 and earlier P/S box (which I started with) has a 13/16" (.813") diameter. The 78 and later has a 3/4" (.750") diameter.

The S-10 box also has a 3/4" (.750"). Now I am looking for a 78 or later rag joint.
