door sags - any fixes?
The door on this '66 convertible - driver's side...sags a bit and it's driving me nuts
what's the easiest fix? i was thinking about putting a jack under one end and hoping something bends (and not the door) what's the usual culprit - door hinge bent down over the years? easiest way to fix?

Don't jack up the door and possibly damage the door and it's mounting . The sag is caused by the hinge pins/bushings wearing out. Door hinge repair kits are available from our host, Performance Years.

Also, some of the bushings are plastic others metal. The metal will hold up longer....

Is is saging because the hinges are worn out, or is it saging because the door is not aligned correctly?

Baron you can temporarily fix that if you need to by placing a jack under the door to hold it ( do not jack on the door the hinge is cast and will break!) and loosen one hinge at a time just enough to move it by tapping it with a block of wood and a hammer, biasing the hinge downward on the front edge to move the slack around the pin from the backside of the pin to the frontside of the pin. I hope this is making sense. Just pivot the hinge so that when you open the door it wont drop because the with the weight of the door on the pin the door will hang level where it needs to be. You still eventually need to fix it but it will work for now.

so, the hinge itself is what i need to replace?
(or rather, the bushings in the hinge) didn't know if it was the mount to the body, the hinge or the mount to the door i'll unblolt it all tonight and try playing with a jack, to see if i can get it bolted up in a different position that gets me by nothing like closing the door and having to lift up on it - or having it make that awful clunking sound

Not to swipe this thread but can you remove the hinges and replace those bushings without removing the fender? I have the same problem baron is having. Been putting off fixing it.

If you have the front fender off, you can remove one hinge at a time. Don't open the door with a hinge off...

Can it be done with the fenders on?

maybe, if you have the right tools looks like it'll be a pain with the fender on

i re-bushed mine on my 70 lemans.
the factory pin has a swedge on the bottom and i couldn't remove the pin. couldn't get my 4" grinder in there and i didn't want to use a torch. took my sawz-all and cut the pin in half and shoved the pin out the top and out the bottom. i had the door supported with my floor jack. installed new bushings and pin. david |

Was reading this thread and I have the same issue. I bought the hinge pin repair kit for PY and it appears the hinge will need to be drilled out to fit the size of the brass bushings.
Mine had plastic bushings so I am guessing it will not hurt to drill out the hinge and installed the bushings? Anyone know the size of bit to use?

Loke said before..... hinge pins and metal bushings.
Let me know how it turns out by just removing the hinges.... I gotta do the same thing for my driver's side door. I don't want to remove the hood and fender if I can help it.

Don't have to remove the hood or fender...
Per the Fisher Body Manual.

Open the door. Grab it by the end furthest from the hinges. Lift the door. It will 'bump' up and down about a 1/2 inch........WORN lower hinge pin!!!!!!!

Yes it can be done with the fenders on the car.
BTW the drill bit size is 31/64 for the replacement bushings I received from PY. All done, turned out real solid. Now I will continue to adjust the radiator support and doors to get the fender gap correct.

I replaced both hinges on the driver's side door of my '67 convertible recently without disturbing the fender. I got the special S-shaped wrench from Harbor Frieght, and it worked well. I went with complete hinges, since they were cost-effective, and my lower hinge was missing the spring and the cam was broken. It takes patience to re-align the door, but well worth it. I too got tired of lifting the door up every time I went to close it. Don't know why I put up with it so long.........
