Default switch to elec. fans or not?????

Recently finished complete rebuild of my 67 ho 400 with all new parts. Cast water pump tweaked,Desert Cooler 4 core radiator, fan shroud and flex fan, ram air exhaust. I believe the timing is about right but it runs 195 on the road and 220 at stop lights. This seems like a lot to me since its not even summer and I haven't turned on the vintageair. How much cooler can I expect it to be by going to dual elec. fans? thanks, Rob

Try testing your fan draft @ an idle by holding a hand towel near the grill opening and see if you can feel a pull inward; good check for proper fan cfm, radiator to core support sealing, and fan to shroud fit. My Vintage Air equipped 462 powered 66 GTO failed this test with the factory ac clutch fan and shroud, so I installed a dual 11" Spal fan unit which has served me well on HOT cross-country trips.

thanks for the info, will give it the test tomorrow. What type of switch/relay did you use for your installation? Rob

Rob,

I also purchased the twin wiring harness with relays and connectors for the Spals. The thermostatic switch is located in the intake cross over next to the thermostat housing and provides automatic fan cycling like on a new car.

Default fans

what is the part # for the fan kit your using, i have a griffen aluminum rad with a 80's caddy fan and a hayden severe duty clutch it cycles on the highway at it locks at 180 releases at 160 back and forth all day, but between the clutch and the rad there isnt much room i probably only have a 1" do you think this will fit i'm using the later 71 style timing cover setup and brackets
the electric fan setup looks sooooo much cooler

Summit part # BCI-75007, $279.95 and they don't list the part # for the harness which was about $75. These fans are among the thinnest and the long water pump "nose" nests between the two fans.

It's my understanding that none of the fan clutches lock up; the heavy duty/rv just slip less than the others, therefore the fan never runs @ the pulley speed.

If you want a progressive (fan rpm varied) controller with additional control for AC try this controller out.
