Default Best crate motor advice

Let's hear it from all you race gals and guys. If you had 10-12k to spend on a crate motor, which engine builder would it come from. What size, block material iron or aluminum, carb or FI. The car is a 70 gto and the motor needs to be very stout street type that is reliable, does not overheat and run on 92 pump gas. Jim Hand, I read your book and it was very informative, but I don't have the time the knowledge or the equipment to do it myself. Perhaps you can jump in here and share your words of wisdom.

Scorpio,
We consider all the guys listed to be capable and reliable - othrwise they would not have been listed in our book. And at the time Ken Crocie (LA area) was not building engines, or he also would also have been listed. I suggest you talk with those builders in your general area, or all of them.

For best street performance, always use the largest engine (455). And I have fairly good performance with the larger engine at the track, also. You just don't have to push them as hard to obtain good power!

If you are in the Ohio area, I would recommend DCI Motorsports. I am sure he can provide you what you need.

if you are close enough to someone to get some hands on tech support, it may be worthwhile.

I don't think anybody has a crate motor program ready, so I would be a good choice as well.

But check into Keefer/Spotts/PPR they might have crate engine sitting there ready.

I'd like to hear the definition of what everyone thinks is a "Crate Engine" To me it means a mass produced engine and not necessarily ready to run. I think a lot of guys think of "turn key" when they say "Crate". Turn key being as it sounds-a complete engine that is ready to run after installation by turning the key.Comments-please

I think the term crate engine has come to mean any engine delivered to your door in a crate, ready to drop in and run. Whether it be a mass-rebuilder type engine or one where I call up a shop like yours, tell you what I want, then wait a few weeks for it to arrive. In either case, it arrives in a crate and is ready for me to drop it in and run it.

Default Turn key vs crate motor

I think a crate motor is one that is completely assembled without the accessories such as pulleys, alternator, power steering, starter and ac. A turn key engine would be one that has all the accessories included. Just my .02
