Default timing cover interchange

Cant seem to find if timing covers are interchangeable throughout the years. Are some years better than others? Are they block specific?

For my specific application i need a cover that will fit a 69 428. What can I use?

Again thanks all you guys for all your tremendous help.

The covers will interchange between blocks. There is a differance with the water pumps early pumps have 8 bolts and later have 11 bolts. Also the water pumps are different lengths the 8 bolt is 4 inches long and the 11 bolt is 4 1/5 inches long. You need to use the correct pulley set with each pump.
the correct pump for the 69 428 will be the 8 bolt pump

I thought that 69 was the year that they switched to the 11 bolt pump? I know the 69's that I have seen have all had it. Also there were two lengths of water pump in 69 depending on if it was an early or late production. All 11 bolt water pump timing covers will interchange, but there are some differences in the timing marks depending on the years. This would only be important if you are trying to correctly restore your Pontiac.

Madhippo, what, year alt. and ps pump brackets are you using or what kind of car are you putting the engine in. This will help determine which cover you should get.

Jeff is correct. '69-up are all pretty much the same with some timing pointer "quirks". Even the lowly 265/301 cover "fits". '68 is unique to itself, in that it uses the earier water pump system and the later balancer. Pre-'64 are different, as well, with a "4-bolt" water pump. Also, as said, they ALL "fit" the blocks. What are you up to?

Not looking for correctness. The car is a complete bastard GTO clone with the parts from several GTO's. The engine is a 69 428, hopefully trying to get +- 500hp. The top end accessories will most likely be coming off the 76 transam engine thats currently in the car. Mostly im just looking for whats going to work the best. Could I use the timing cover off of the 76 400 block?

Yes the cover and all the accessory brackets from your 400 will work for you.
