Default Backup/neutral safety switch location?

I'm new at this game. Just joined the forum today and only recently got my dream car from 38 years ago So here's my problem. My backup lights don't come on There is no switch on the floor automatic shifter. Is the switch located on the shifter mechanism or on the lower steering column (even on auto trans)? Thanks for any help

Welcome aboard! 1969? Sounds like a VERY good year for a Goat. Come to think about it, it's the BEST year....

The reverse light switch is column mounted, integrated into the ignition switch.

Thanks Andretti - that probably explains why it start in any gear also - the neutral lockout switch is in the ignition also (I guess) ??

Yes. I would assume the upper column is rotating when you move the shifter thru gears. Must be a switch problem since both connector plugs go to the same switch on lower column.

It is possible someone prior removed the linkage from transmission to the column resulting in no reverse/neutral switch movement. They would have also had to remove the steering wheel lock plate. I've seen this done for headers. Unlikely...

EDIT: reverse/neutral switch is seperate from ignition switch, both on column.
P.S. Post pic's of your car for us to see

That's it Andretti, the linkage is missing . I took the switch out and it works the neutral lockout and reverse lights when I manually move the slider. Now I need the linkage. Anything out there??
Have posted this request on the parts forum also.

ricks69goat, I have the two rods you need. There is a bracket that bolts to the frame that one of the rods goes through (with a bushing). Do you have that? I can send you a picture of it if you need tonight when I get home. Jeff

Ricks69goat, here is a picture of the rods I have. Obviously need cleaned up. If you have the bracket on the frame, you'd be set. Let me know. Jeff

Thanks for the picture Jeff. I don't think I have the bracket on the frame - Another picture would be great. If I can't find one of these maybe I could get one fabbed up.(I really have to get a shop manual!) What do you want for the rods? Thanks again!

Here's a picture of the bracket. If you send me your email, I'll send you a better quality picture. I'm surprised someone would remove that bracket from the frame even if they pulled the rod/linkage.

the next item you should get is the factory service and body manuals for this car. It will show all this info and more. Available on CD or paper.
