In 1989 there was a test run of base model Firebirds with Trans Am ground effects. They were sold in Los Angeles, CA, Sacramento, CA, and Denver, CO under the name Firebird SSA and Firebird XS. They basically look like a T/A except for regular Firebird hood and tail lights. This eventually lead to standard T/A ground effects on base Firebirds(delete option was available.)

When the cars first came out, back in 1989, they were marketed in three places at first.
Los Angeles (which would have the Firebird XS on the two fenders)
Sacramento (which would have the Firebird SSA on the two fenders)
Denver (which, as of yet, I have never found out if it had anything on the fenders)
After the cars were built for awhile, they were sold at any Pontiac dealership. I don't know how long after yet either. These cars only had the Firebird emblem on them.
The idea, was to give Firebird buyers a more sporty appearance with their car, giving it a Trans Am look. But, with the Firebird engine and suspension.
It was a Trans Am look much cheaper too.
No Trans Am hood, regular Firebird Taillights, and the regular Trans Am rear spoiler.
In 1991, the 305 TBI engine became avalible as an option. Also, a limited edition was released, having gold Firebird emblems and gold 15 inch diamond spoke wheels in gold. Nothing was on the car stating a limited edition. So, you just go by the gold stated above.

Hope this helps,

George

Nope,
I think it's just Sacto area, the SSA, and the Los Angeles area, XS.
Never found out any other meaning.
Check out some of my pics:
