Default 1970 to 1973 Radios

Any one here know how to tell 70 radio from a 71 or 72? Thanks in advance.

I can tell you the 70 had five buttons, including one AM and one FM that flipped the radio face over from one to the other. Don't know if they kept that style in later years on not.

Does it still have the tag with the part number? It may also have a tag with a date code too.

On the side of the radio there should be a decal with some numbers. One should be listed as "Service Model Number". The first digit will be the model year, followed by GM division, and then the carline. The division number for Pontiac is 2 and a Firebird is an F-Body. There are several other letters and codes beyond that signify radio style and revision. For example:

Service Model No. 42FFP1

4 = 1974 model year
2 = Pontiac
F = F-body(Firebird)
FP = AM/FM mono
1 = revision 1 electronics

If the decal is gone look at the back of the radio at the large aluminum heatsink. In the middle will be a round Delco power transistor with a date code. First pair of digits is the year, the second pair is the week. Date code 7413 would be 13th week of 1974. This should give you an idea of what year the radio is without the service decal intact.

Judging by the radios I have '70-75 Firebird radios had the Delco script and '76-77 had the Delco/GM block on the dial face. On some of the models the Delco script is smaller than the others.

I used to think this was true untill I started hel part out what appeared to be very original (often beat up) 75-76 Firebirds that had Delco-script AM/FM radios... Fuctionally all the 70-77 Firebird radios are the same - only the small details mentioned in this post differntialte them... and even then the differnce between (lets say) a 1970 AM "dual speaker" radio, and a 1976 AM "dual speaker" radio are few enough that you can make the late one look 100% correct...

My 70 RAIV TA has it's orig. am/fm st, has red light. It was made in july.

I have never seen a green stereo light. At least not on a 70-77 Firebird radio.

I personally believe that the AM Radios never recieved the block script, because I have never seen one... I currently have a (both working) 1975 (single speaker), and 1976 (dual speaker) radio - I say those years becasue they were taken out of horribly original (read: beat up) cars - as a matter of fact, the 1976 radio has a broken button, so I used the Firebird pieces to convert a 1970 Tempest radio to work for a 1970 T/A... (the 1975 radio has a 1970 dial face currently installed; I'm keeping it for my car...)

I have only seen the block script on later cars, and cannot be sure if they even came on 1975 or 1976 cars - because (once again from parting out cars) I have only observed Delco 'script' AM/FM raido's in place...
- this would lead me to believe that the block script would have been specific to 1977 (and possably later 1976 cars)...

But that's just what I've observed from 20-some-odd year old beat up cars that I had a hand in parting out...

Bumping an old thread for help.

If I'm reading this correctly, no red dot with AM/FM is mono...
Model NO. 02AFPK1 would be 1970 Pontiac A Body & F Body...
Heat sink transistor # 6944 would be the 44th week of 1969...
Delco is in script, lower right corner...
There is also a tag stuck on that says INTERNAL REAR SPEAKER FADER - that should be self explanatory....right?

Am I good on all of that?

You're close.

0 = 1970
2 = Pontiac
A = A-body
FP = AM/FM mono
K = rear speaker fader
1 = revision 1 electronics

If it didn't have the "K" it would just be AM/FM mono with output for a front speaker only.

the trouble is that alot of the radios I have seen either had the tag missing, or beat up... only the radios that stayed in cars for a very long time seem to have thier tags intact (or the owner knew to take care of the radio and not damage the tag)

to summarise from looking at the dial face you can differntiate this way:
AM/FM w/o "dot" = mono
AM/FM w/ "dot" = stereo
AM/FM with "Delco" script = '70 to (late)'75/'76 application
AM/FM with "Delco" in box = (late)'75/'76 to 1977 application

Keep in mind that dial faces can be swapped out.
AM/FM Stereo Radios have more cooling fins than their Mono counterparts.

Functionally 1970-1977 Firebird radios are interchangable. (as long as you have the existing wiring for it to work in your car!!)

Also, A-body Radios can be made to appear & function properly in 70-77 Firebirds.

Johnny,you must have been smoking something funny when you saw the "green" dot in the radio dial.
There actually could have been one in the vicinity,but NOT in the radio.

70-74's with heated back glass initially used a green dot indicator on the switch.
Later ones changed out to a red dot.(I think I have that right) & then in 75,they went back to green AGAIN.

Don't they have red/green dots in the eye test?

I also seem to recall a TV show........
