I have a '72 Lemans w/column shift auto. Converting to floor shift. Will a floor shift '69 column be the same enuf to swap? Both are "A Bodies"

I am showing part# 7807144 69-71
# 7813871 72
# 7812499 73-74
BUT, It shows me
# 7810658 as 71-72 All floor shift W/O tilt wheel
# 7813106 as 71-72 All floor shift with Tilt

So what I would say is only thing that will work for you is a 71-72 floor shift column.
I sure some of the more seasoned Pontiac guys would know for sure.

I changed mine to floor shift. I took out the column and cut the hump of that the shifter was on and filled it in. Little JB weld and some putty coat sand & paint. Looks as good as new.

But what did you do about the PRND21 indicator on the top of column? Just remove it?

The '69 column will work in your '72. The thing you have to watch for is the ignition switch on the lower portion and the switch that controls the backup lights and neutral safety switch. You may or may not be able to directly plug in the harness connectors from your '72 if the ignition switch is different. That is the only variable you may encounter. If it doesn't plug in, simply take the ignition switch from your '72 and mount it on the '69 column and you'll be in business.

Yes I just cut all the unneeded pieces off my column, even the shift linkage at the bottom under the hood. Then just filled and smoothed.

As for your wires pont3 has a good point about them not all plugging in. The reverse switch & neutral safety switch wires I cut out of a junk yard car. Then I extended them so they would plug into the floor shifter and still plug into the factory under dash plugs. That helps keep things looking clean.

If you have the 69 column I would give it a shot
1st. might same a good 72 column for someone who needs it.
