I've driven Fords all of my life and still have 5-6 Classic Ford rides. I'm new to Pontiacs but have always wanted a 1961 Ventura 2 dr hdtp std shift. (I wouldn't tell my Ford buddies this but I think the 1961 Pontiac is the best looking car ever). I've just purchased a 1961 Catalina convertible that originally had a 3 speed column shift standard trans but has been converted to an automatic.

Can anybody help in decoding my VIN? it's 861P22847

I also need the shift lever, linkage, z-bar, and clutch fork so I can put it back as a strd shift car. ...or, I may just stick a 4-speed in it.

Thanks for the help.

welcome the board, t-plex

I /think/ '61 and '62 VIN sequences are symmetrical, and as a '62 man, here's how I would decipher it were it a "deuce"...

861P22847

8 = Bonneville.
61 = 1961.
P = Pontiac, Mich. final assy plant.
22847 = the 21,846th 1961 Bonneville made in the Pontiac, Mich plant.

(Serial numbers began with body number 1001)

You say you have a Ventura, and that was more on its own in '61, so 8 probably means Ventura, not Bonneville.

For comparison, my GP is 962A1742.

9 = Grand Prix
62 = 1962
A = Arlington, Tex. final ass't plant
1742 = 741st 1962 GP to roll down that plant's line.

oh well, class is over. Best of luck and enjoy that beautiful car!

Stay Tuned,
