Who makes the best slick? I will be running 28/10 slicks. I was leaning toward Hoosiers. Any suggestions?

Hoosiers or Mickey Thompson both hook good. I've used the above 2 & also Goodyears & i really didnt care for the Goodyears. Best 60 foot times have been with Mickey Thompsons.

I like the MT's as well. The Hoosiers hook fantastic when they're brand new but start to peel up after the first few passes. The MT's seem to be a bit tougher and resist getting all torn up. My car is quite heavy on weight and torque and tends to be hard on tires.

I like the M/T Et Drag.
Is the burn-out optional or what?

I'm looking at slicks myself. I will probably get the M/T's. I think I will probably have to go with 26 X 8.5-15's. The 28 X 9.0's would be really tight on my '64 GTO. I have 235 drag radials on, 4 7/8" backspaced, 8.5" wide Centerlines now. I have a late model rear and the tires barely rub on the wheel house. I have 2" clearance on the inside. I wish I had an early/narrow rear. Anyone have 9" slicks on a '64 or '65? If so, how tight?

I now run the M/T 28 x 10.5 x 15 slick on my 1965 GTO. No modifiacations to anything but I only run a 7 inch rim. For years I ran the M/T 26 x 10 x 15 slick on the same 7 inch rim.

What about Pheonix F/X slicks? They are expensive but how good are they? They were formally Firestones if that helps. The pricing for the Pheonix slicks are just about as identical to Goodyears.

In the old days I ran M&H's, then Goodyears, then I ran Firestones, (they lasted the longest before traction went away). Now I have a set of Hoosiers. Won't know how they work until next season, but everyone that I've talked to say that they hook great on our track. (somewhat cooler track temperature than most)

Bill

My son got a pair of Hoosiers last spring and said that they hooked a lot better than the Goodyears that he had been running. ('90 TA w/blown BBC, 6.91@194 mph)

Ron,

What are your wheel specs? (back spacing in particular) I'm probably going to run M/T ET Streets on my 65 GTO and would like to know if you have encountered any clearance issues with the 7 inch wheel.

Also, are you running a stock width rear housing?

Thanks

Black 65 GTO. I don't have a clearance problem. The Centerline rim I use has a 5 inch backspacing. I run spacers on both rims. On the drivers side a run a 5/16 thick spacer and on the passenger side I run a 5/16 and a 7/32 spacer. No clearance problems and I have not had to cut or trim anything. I run a 12 bolt rear end with weld on ends. I was told that it was built to the original and correct width but I can't put my hand on the bible and swear to it. When money get better I intend to put on 8 inch wide rims. M/T says for every 1 inch if rim width change the bulge of the tire will change 4/10's.

On a '64-'65, GTO the biggest ET Street you should be able to fit is a 28 x 11.5". Note: The ET Streets are measured for section width, not tread width. I forget exactly but I think they are actually 27.8" in diameter and 9.0 on the tread width. The sidwell is rounded more than the slicks and gets real close to the back part of the inner wheelhouse. Sounds like Ron was lucky and able to fit a 10.5" slick on his GTO. Possibly the 7" rim helps pull the sidewall in. On my '64, I know a 10.5" ET Drag would never fit using my 8"rim and my wheels are perfectly centered. I also use a 12 bolt with welded on Ford 9" ends.

Amazing how so-called "same chassis" cars can be different.

You would all benefit from installing a taller tire, if possible, as opposed to a wider tire. Taller tires have more contact area than the wide tires do, giving you more traction.

A taller tire (> 28.0")will not fit in a '64-'65 stock wheel well. I only know of one person who was able to fit a 29" tall tire in a '64 GTO. I don't know how he did it because a 29" did not come close to fitting on mine. The wheelhouse turns outward towards the body at the back. Even my 28" tall tires show evidence of hitting the wheelhouse from tire growth. It would have to be mini tubbed or cut up to tun a taller tire. Trust me, I would if I could. '66 and later GTO's and F bodys, you got it lucky being able to run a taller tire.

I've run M/T, Goodyears, Firestones, and I'm currently running Pheonix's. The best hooking tires were stiff sidewall Firestones but I only got 85 passes out of them. The M/T and the Goodyears were the same with the exception that the Goodyears lasted about 70 more passes(105 compared to 175). The Pheonix slicks I have now hook fine but they aren't going to last any longer than the M/T. My buddy uses Hoosiers and swears by them. He got almost 300 passes and never lost any 60'.

Eric - I used to run 29.5" slicks on my 64 GTO. I still have them in my garage. However, they are only 9" wide and mounted on a 7" rim. The contact point on mine was at the bottom outside front of the wheel well opening. I tried fitting the M/T 28x10.5's from my racecar onto the streetcar and they would not fit. However those were mounted on 9" wheels. I changed from the 28x10.5 M/T drag slick on a 9” wheel to 29x11 Goodyear’s on 10” wheels. The M/T’s gave me a slightly better 60' time, but the Goodyear’s are much more consistent. I rotated the M/T's about every 15 runs. I rotate the Goodyear's every 5 runs.

I run the M/T 28X10.5 slicks on my 65 LeMans. They hook up excellent, 1.49 to 1.55 60's. The thing about using the M/T is all you need is a very small burn out and they hook just as good as if you burn them off the rim. I used to do big real big harry burn outs, makes for a good show but is very expensive to change tires. If you use M/T's, very small burn out and tires last much longer.

Thanks Tim Corcoran....I too noticed the hook was excellent with a small burnout.
