on my 67 firebird, I replaced the resistance wire going to the coil with a regular 12 gauge wire at the junction box. I did away with the wire that went from the starter to the coil. It's very simple.
The simplified version of the idea is that originally the distributor and coil setup needed 12v to start and get going but only about 9v once it was running. The HEI needs 12v continuously.
