Hey guys, Old combo went 11.77 @113. The engine failed (spun bearing). New combo changes include bigger solid roller cam 276/276 609 lift out for 268/276 660 lift, 750 demon to 1050 dominator, Chris at continental is changing 3500 convertor to 3800 plus, also beefing it up, 3.32's out for 3.73's, cal tracs, and a few chassis mods to make the car a bear to drive on the street. My buddy ( 9 sec turbo buick guy) is telling me I'm making the classic mistake of screwing up a tried and true combo and will probably run slower due to bigger cam and too big carb. I wanna go for it, What do you think???

It should definitely run quicker with your new combination, but it will be less street friendly.

I will only be on the street for fun now and then. It wasn't "friendly" with old combo really. Thanks

I was making the assumption that you have good flowing heads.

The heads are not what I paid for. What do you expect? I bought them from Bruce Fulper. I paid for cnc, got hand ported, CFM @ 28" 294.9 @700 lift (intake) 224.5 @700 exhaust. Am I pushing it?

It would be nice if they flowed more, but I think you will be fine. I am particularly surprised at the poor flowing exhaust, but the E/I is still 75%. It certainly wants a dual pattern cam. You should probably make sure the LSA is not too close as well.

Sounds good, I'll do a little more homework. The old cam grinder at Chet Herbert's said he could grind this new one from my old cam for $52 dollars but later refused because I hadn't cc'd my heads and so on. Kind of funny, Like I'm the young grasshopper and I don't know what's good for me. Long story short, I'm glad he didn't because a little birdy told me the regrind would reduce the heel of the cam and lower my lifter and give the cam even more leverage to break the lifter bore! Wow never thought of that.

That may be a problem. Dominators are a lot of carb...

Goathead - I have one on my 400 and it runs great. Good flowing heads and large roller cams help a lot.

I'd keep the 3.23 rear gear in. Just update the converter
Carb change alone worth + 2-3 MPH at the big end. Keep an eye on 60foot changes |
