i think black is a bit better but since i dont like dishing out $$$ for gaskets especially when they just come in a set...i make/cut my own gaskets out of the gasket paper you can buy at the autostore and black rtv for the timing chain cover...

I use Ultra Blue exclusively. I just like the color . I have used it for timing cover's no problem. The best way I have found if your going to be just using RTV for a gasket, is to spread a thin coat on both surfaces to be mated. Let cure for 10-15 min, to form a 'skin' on the silicone. Then assemble the pieces. This method seem's to work well in my experiences.

I have mad timing cover gaskets out of gasket paper when nothing was open. They have a seam at the top but they still work fine.

I prefer "The Right Stuff".

I've used RTV - Blue, Black, Clear, and Form a Gasket and have never had a leak from any of the mating surfaces or joints.

I also like the Right Stuff. 500 miles so far on my 467 and not a leak anywhere(not even the rear main, probably just jinxed myself). Only problem with it is that it's hard as heck to remove. I did just take off my water pump and plate to check the clearance to try addressing it running a little warm and used the blue stuff putting it back together. Sealed up fine.
