Can anyone help in decoding the VIN on my Catalina?
861P22847

I'm new to Pontiacs but have always wanted a '61 Ventura . I just bought a '61 Catalina Conv.
Close enough!! Maybe I can trade the convertible for what I really want.

If it is an 8 at the beginning of the number,it would be a Bonneville.

the 61 is the year
the P is for the Pontiac plant
the rest are the serial numbers

Look on the Body Identification Plate under the hood for more info.

The cal tag (located under the hood on the drivers side should have the series # 2367 if it is a catalina convertible,
based on what you told us this should be a bonneville, the first digit is the series # catalina should be a 3

Thanks for the help guys.

As you can tell I'm a Pontiac newbie. The car is being delivered within the next 7-10 days. (I bought the car from photographs and owner information) I have pictures of the car and it definately is a Catalina (short wheelbase and one piece taillights). I'm thinking the owner mistook the first digit as an 8 instead of a 3.

This car was originaly a 3 speed std shift on the column. The car is painted a god-awful "rootbeer" brown and I'm sure it isn't a factory color as the previous owner thought it was originally a red car.

Is there a website where the following codes are broken down?

color
trans
engine

Again, ...many thanks, and I'm sure to have many more questions.

Pontiac is kinda unique in the car hobby because there is a company called PONTIAC HISTORICAL SERVICES that can provide you with full documentation for any Pontiac veh. from 1961-1985.
You send them the VIN and a check or money order for $35.00 and they will give you a copy of the build sheet, production information, options that your car came with, and what dealer took delivery of your car when it was new. They have a website that will help you also. www.phs-online.com
good luck, I have a 61 Ventura and live in Kennesaw, where are you located in Ga.???

You said about the short wheel base. I believe 61 was the only year Pontiac used same wheel base on all large cars. I seem to remember reading that some perspective Bonniville buyers were disappointed that that the car was smaller.

Nope, the Catalina and Ventura are 119", the Bonneville and starchief are 123", the bonneville is 7" longer than the Catalina and Ventura
