I have a 76 low compression Firebird with a Pontiac 350. I just finished installing a Summit 2801 cam with comp magnum roller rockers. I put on an edelbrock performer manifold topped off with a Holley 4160 600cfm carburetor with vacuum secondaries. What are folks suggestions as far as gearing. Also, should I stay with the stock torque convertor or go with something else? I plan on driving this car on the street a few days a week and on the weekends.

Thanks,
Robert

3.23 would be a good gear for a mostly street driven car and 2801 cam.

Motor, you dont think some 3.42's or 3.73's would be better...it is a 350 and a really heavy car, could do with a lil more gear not to mention no converter....might be better with a taller gear if hes not doing alot of interstate cruising and wants red light to red light performance.

Just depends on how much highway driving he does. Even 3.42's can get on your nerves at speeds of 75 for any amount of distance. The 2801 cam is pretty small, and will make tons of low end power. He could get by with higher numerical gears, but it sure makes for bad highway cruises!

Yeah, I live in Los Angeles county so I am on the freeway quite a bit. I've just noticed that since the cam install, it pulls like a raped ape from approx 2000rpms and up. At fewer rpms it drives just like any other car on the street. I do like the idle though. I used to chirp the tires from a stop at WOT. Not anymore.

I built up a 350 for a '69 Firebird owned by my brother. We used a stock intake/750 Q-jet, the 068 cam (very close to your 2801) along with an inexpensive 2500-stall converter (TCI Saturday Night Special) and a TH400 trans w/shift kit.

The car has a set of 3.42 gears and 26" tall 235/60-15 tires. Not bad on the freeway, but about all you could stand. Go for the 3.23s, add a converter too if you can.

This heavy fully-optioned car runs in the high-14s on street radials, it doesn't even have headers on it.
