I am in the process of hanging my doors and I have run into a problem. The original door hinges were shot so a picked up a set of used hinges.

The driver's door fit great , but the passenger door cannot be adjusted to be even at the bottom.

A acquaintance said that it was probably a 64 hinge rather than a 65. Does the 64 hinge have a differnet offset than a 65?

BTW: I still need another hinge since I do not beleive I can grind this one far enough to make it fit.

'64 & 65 lower hinges are the same,

4506971 RH
4506972 LH

...never noticed a minute difference but will compare between hinges on '64 442 post doors (for sale), & lower hinges I pulled today from 65 Chevelle parts car.

The original design of the 1964 & 1965 hinges are completely different, however they are interchangeable. The 1964 original part number hinges were replaced by the original 1965 hinges (which "ol' Pinion head" listed above) as a GM service part. I would guess that "almeyer" has one 1966-67 hinge which is very similar in design to the 1965 hinge, but has a different location dimension where the pin is located. I would put the LH and RH hinges side by side to see if they are symmetrically opposite. It will be obvious if one hinge is a 1965 hinge and the other hinge is a 1966-67 version if they are different.

I have now learned that what I have is a 66/67 hinge. It sure looks the same but does not work.

Interestly, the Chevelle repro people are selling repro hinges for 66/67 but no 64/65.

OPH,
Original 64 hinges are aluminum.
Are 65 hinges steel? or still aluminum?
Want to sell those 64 442 hinges?
Tom V.

We got a pair of sample 64-65 cast lower hinges in last month. Anyone want to volunteer to test fit them?

Al, hinges shipped 3 day select today. Let us know in this thread how they look and fit. If they are correct, we have a part# RPD35 $109/pair.

The casting numbers i quoted in above post are 65 hinges. The casting numbers for 64 are, 21-17 and 20-16. Tom.

Got the Hinges and I have 2 problems. One is they will not fit without modification, second they are different from the originals.

I have not tried to modify them yet but the mechinizm is quite different. Seems to work better but noticely different.

Will post if I decide to modify

"almeyer", These new reproduction hinges appear to be based on the original 1964 hinge design, so if they don't look like your original 1965 hinges, you will know why.

I had never seen the early 64 hinge so the design was new to me. I had seen the roller design on 64s.
I milled the surface of the hinge that attaches to the body until all the casting marks were gone and shaved the side the connects to the door around the spring base and lower hole. It now fit well.

Tom W. - I replaced the drivers side lower hinge on my 64 and it had the numbers you stated were for the 65. I know these were original as the car has been in the family since it was new. Did Pontiac use the 65 hinges on the 64 models? I too am having a small problem getting the door edge to line up with the Quarter edge. If I line it up to the bottom the top sticks out, if I line up the top, the bottom of the door is inside the body line. I suppose I could use a shim to push the bottom out a little.

Anyone have any suggestions?

They might or probally used castings either redesigned or designed for the 65 on late built 64,s. The 64 had a spring and a swivel strap stop. The 65 had a roller wheel and a fluctuated strap as sold in catalogs. As far as fit,it,s a 64 and not perfect,1st year, big fenders where they meet the door and so on. Tom.

My 64 was made around mid-march, delivered to me on March 28. It has the roller arrangement.

OMT, i don,t know if you had the car since new? so either it came from the factory like that or the hinges were repaired with the only thing available, the roller detent. I have a June KC car that has the swivel strap.Even though the casting numbers are different, the only difference is the detent between years.
