Can somebody tell me the best way to clean up the alternator mine looks like $#*#* ?

The best way would be to take it apart and blast it with glass beads.

I used a wire wheel on my bench grinder. Looked lots better.

Buy a new one or buy some rustoleum aluminum color paint.

I used a wire wheel and bruch and painted it with Eastwood Alumablast and Mar-Hyde semi gloss black.

If you can find a good rebuilder locally, they will glass bead it and rebuild it for around 45-50 bucks. It will look (and work) like new.

I took mine off three years ago. Bead blasted the outer case and rebuilt it all at the same time. When I was done I clear coated the outside and reinstalled on the motor. Looks great still....
