I have the chance to get a compressor from a relative of mine. It's a Sanborn Black Max. 60 gallon tank, 5hp, single phase, 15amps (I think), 230 volts.
I happen to know that it's hardly been used. Maybe 40 hours or so total. I know this isn't a top of the line compressor and I believe they were carried by Sam's Warehouse until Coleman bought the company out.
Anybody have any experience with this brand? What's it worth in good condition? I was considering giving him $200 for it and he's agreeable to that if I decide that I want it.

A comparable compressor new would be $400 at Home depot..

We are talkin Singe stage right?
If it's dual stage $200 is a steal.

I just purchased a single stage, 7.5HP, 60 Gal, 12.5 CFM tank from Home Depot 3 weekends ago. I paid $399 for it and it came with a tool package of 5 tools. Not bad, I like it.

A 15amp motor is about 3hp at a standard rating..
a real 7.5hp motor will pull 32 amps.

The home store compressor motors are rated a little funny

Check the tag on the motor.. the HP rating will probably be marked as "Special"
Something handy to know when comparing a DevAir or IR compressor to a home store brand.

Ok, the one being offered by Home Depot is the one I was comparing it to in my mind. I saw that one a few weeks ago and was considering it as this one became available to me.
Scott is right, my motor is rated "5hp SPL". It is also a single stage compressor.
I guess $200 is a fair deal. It'll save me $200. By the way, two new hoses and some various air tools (grinder, sprayer, ratchet, impact, etc.) will go with it. My biggest problem will be deciding where to put it and wiring a new 230v outlet. My breaker box is full.
Thanks!

Oh yeah, I have not been able to determine a CFM rating. Coleman bought the company and the Sanborn unit is a tough Google search. I'm going to assume that it's about the same as the Porter Cable (ie. Home Depot)

Greg, You can buy tandem breakers for your panel. 2 breakers will fit where 1 breaker used to. Buy 2 tandems and 1 double pole. Make sure your service can handle the extra load.

Thanks Bud, I'll definitely look into going that route.
That has to be a lot easier and cheaper than adding a second panel.

Thats what I'm going to od in my box..
I have a 200a service so it shouldn't be a big deal..

I'm going to move 4 15 single poles onto 2 double pole 15A's then add the 30a 220 for the compressor.

You can get the double pole brakers for about $10 at Home depot.

The compressor itself is going into a small shed to be built outside the garage that will also handle yard tool storage.

Yeah, I checked out Home Depot and saw the tandem breakers in the 8 to 10 dollar range.
I too had considered pouring myself a little concrete pad outside my garage for the compressor, build a small shed and plumb my airlines to various outlet locations in my basement workshop and garage. Just plug into the nearest location.
Thanks for the info. You guys have given me some good ideas.

One more question...maybe a dumb one...but- Scott, you say you have a 200a service-
How do you determine that?

Should be on the main pannel.. marked on the label
or look at the main braker for the whole pannel..
my main braker is marked 200.

Now how they calculate pannel loads is a black art I'm not educated in.
