Are most of ypu guys running stainless valves running lash caps? Heard some of the ss valves don;t have a hardened tip and need them, other say they don't. Seems like just something else to come off and get in the wrong place to me.

if your lash is loose enough to allow a lash cap to come off your pushrods would fall out of place first and probably bind up and bend.

I build em both ways, but for performance applications, always prefer to use lash caps for the following:
1.Gives you a little larger "safe" area for the sweep of the roller.
2. Seems to be a harder material than the valve stem and doesn't show wear or mushroom.
3. Gives a little more height to help with geometry on high lift situations.
4. Seems to add a little more clearance on retainer to rocker.
5. Helps get you to the goal of really "needing" taller valve covers.

I use them on my stainless valves. I had to use them to clear the retainer. I've had some fall off when I was learning to adjust valves. They seem to migrate to the back of the head.

We used to run them in the EFI car, but after one run of the Silver State Classic, we noticed 3 of them decided to come loose. When Jack and I got the car home we took them out.

My 2 cents.

Lash caps don't come out by themselves.

I'm running them, and I'm also running a stud girdle. If adjusted properly, I can't imagine them falling out.

They cannot fall out unless your running .100 of lash. I run them also with no problems. Just make sure you don't forget them when taking the rockers off of the car.

Uhhhhh... Whoops. Missed a small part of the tale.

What the post should have said is that we slightly bent a few pushrods during the run and the lash caps came out.

Sorry for the confusion.

I use them. Never had any problems with them coming off, and I also use a girdle.

Sorry couldn't resist.

So where did the caps end up? That's my worry bend a pushrod polylock break/come loose and you end up with extras pieces floating around.

The only time I had a lash cap come off was when the rest of the motor came out the bottom of the oil pan!

Skip, I found mine in a pool of oil by the rear head bolt. I thought it went down in until I took a magnet around the head bolt. No problems since then.

I had an old polylock allen screw in my old 409 that came loose and NEVER showed up even on tear down! Must have gone out in an oil change.
