I'm a Firebird guy and not really up on GTO trivia, so I hope you can help me out. A question came up to me the other day. How many 69 RAIV GTO convertibles were built?

Thanks,
Matt

Have you guys seen the one for sale at Volo? It's a 1969 GTO convertable with 4-speed and Ram Air IV. They're only asking $65K for it! I'd love to buy it, but then I'd have to live in it too. Check it out at: http://www.voloautomuseum.com

Thanks for the replies gents. The reason I asked this question is because I was in a conversation the other day with a friend. We were talking about the car that got away. Back in 1981 I was looking for my first car beyond mom's hand-me-down 66 BelAir sedan. My grandfather was in the automotive business his entire career and was helping me look for a car. I found a convertible 69 GTO in the paper and went and looked at it with him. The seller didn't know much about it. He was the original owner. He bought the car from the dealership two blocks away from his house back in 69 because he liked the color, antique gold. The only thing he could tell me about the drivetrain was that the motor was a 370 something or other. I was only 16 at the time and didn't realize the significance of this number. Long story short, grandpa talked me out of the car. I didn't understand what I passed up until years later. Here is the heartbreaker - gentlemen, I could have had this car for $3000.00. Damn, I'm tearing up just typing this story.

Later,
Matt

I'm gonna save ya a little heartache.

I've been to shows and have met people who are proud of their cars they either have owned or owned currently. There was a guy with the hot-rodded '65 Coronet stuffed with a 440. When I asked him what was the original engine to his car, he responded, "413." (The 413 was never available in the Coronet.)

Or the old man who ran a garage at his house who had his son's old '70 SS peeking out from behind. When I asked him what engine was in that car, he said, "The biggest one." (It was a 396, not a 454.)

My point is that if you say the seller did not know much about it, why do you think his number of 370 has any credibility?

This happens all the time. People's memory go over time and they lose the accuracy they once had . . . or they never knew to begin with.

Just remember to read between the line on Volo ads.
There is nothing that says "numbers matching." They imply it with phrases like "correct motor" or "matching engine" but where does it say "matching numbers motor"?

Did you see their ad for a "CORRECT MOTOR" '69 400 'bird? From the pictures it's obvious that it's not even an original 400 car!
