I'm thinking about purchasing another set of wheels and tires for my 1969 GTO. The redlines and rally 2's look great, but I want something that fills out the fenderwells. I had a 1972 Cutlass a few years back and it had L60's on stock olds ralleys (7" wide) on the back with no rubbing issues and this was with a stock rear suspension (no air shocks). I would imagine the rear quarters are pretty much the same as my 1969. Has anyone tried a tire that wide? If so, what wheels and backspacing do you have them on? I see Rally 2's can be purchased in sizes up to 15x10. I don't think I would go that wide, but the 15x8 might be an option.

I have 18X10's on my 69 GTO, with 285/40ZR18 tires. My wheels were custom made.

Companies that make and sell wheels should be able to tell you what will fit. I think 15x8's from any 60's-eta domestic car will probably fit.

BTW, the fronts have less clearance. I have 17x8's up front with 235/45ZR17 tires, and we had to cut the fenders.

Oops, forgot this:

While shopping, I found that offset and backspacing were very complicated, and different companies seem to define them differently. My advice is to seek expert advice and don't buy anything until you are sure it fits.

It's the front tires that will be hardest to fit because everyone's car seems to be a little diferent. I have 15x7 rally 2's with 235/60-15 being the biggest tire that won't rub. Others on this forum have had to go smaller than that. My 255/60-15 in the back fills the well nicely and is the same diameter as the original tires, so no speedometer calibrating would be necessary.

Inside upper lip.Tires were rubbing. I was hoping 15x7 were going to make a difference with the same tires.

2 other ?'s. What back spacing did you have on the 10 inchers. Do you think a 295/50/15 (shorter tire) would have rubbed ? There have been quite a few questions these past 10 or so days regarding wheel fit in 68-72 A-body's on this board. It think it all stems from the Chevelle in this months PHR that had 15x10 wheels with 295/50/15's. That car looked awesome and I think alot of us (myself included) want that look. I would rather go the 50 rout instead of the 60 since the 50 is about an inch and a half shorter.

Jeff King-
Do you have a picture of your car with the 275/60's on the back? This sounds like it might be the ticket. If I can hold off until summer, I have a line on a pair of 15x8.5 rims with 295/50's on them that I might try for fit. I'd like to put the widest tire possible inside the fenderwells to get the really mean look!! I don't know about you, but the 205/70/14's on the car right now are awfully small.

It should be possible to get at least a 305 tire into the GTO rear. With my 285's, there is at least 2 inches of clearance on the inside. The key will be finding the right offset and backspacing to center the tire in the well.

My tires did not rub on installation only opon aggresive driving. I did not want any quarter panel damage, so I went to original 14's. Now that I have the geeky original look; I'm trying to achieve a more aggresive look. It seems the 15x7 w/275 rear and 215 or 25 in the front would work for me. With this forum, I'm getting alot of help. Thanks

Thank you everyone for your input. I too have gained much help from this forum. It sounds to me like the GTO should be able to fit about the same size or larger tires than what I had on my '72 olds. If I can't go with the 295/50's, it appears 275/60's on 15x8 rims will be a same combo to use on the rear.

Bret-
Your rims and tires look really good. How much room do you have left between the tire and quarter panel?
