i thought i read somewhere that the rear view mirrors on 70 & 71's had a silver colored frame whereas later years had a black frame. can anyone confirm this ? i'm considering the following item as an upgrade to mine.

thanks - tim

Correcto! '70-72 Firebirds had stainless backed rear view mirrors. A federal regulation started for the 1973 model year required rear view mirrors to not have a reflective surface towards on coming traffic. All '73-'81 have a satin black finish.

The early rear view mirrors are hard to find and worth some bucks. I'll be surprised if you get that one for $4.99 by the time the auction closes.

Can anyone say how to dismantel the rearview mirror (the grey rubber around the frame) so that I can have the mirror re-silvered? Steve

The 70 mirrors also had that awful split rod and ball mount design with a setscrew holding the rod halves against the ball. It always seem to vibrate loose at the worst moment, usually in heavy traffic when I needed to see what was behind me. Even though it meant going non-original, I was oh so happy to replace it with a later style GM mirror.
