how hard would you have to make the tranny shift to get it to chirp into 3rd? i have an 80 TA with a 455 making about 350-400hp and a lot of torque. i'm also going to be putting in 3.42 gears. would something like a stage 2 shift kit do it?

Even without a shift kit, the way to get a really hard 2-3 shift is to use all flat (no wavy) steels in the direct clutch and to disable the 2-3 accumulator in the valve body. I did this once and it shifted way too hard for my tastes. Spun the outer ring on the harmonic balancer it shifted so hard. I put a wavy in the direct clutch but left the 2-3 accumulator disabled and now it's just to my liking.
The 2-3 accumulator is in the valve body. You can remove the valve body, pull the 2-3 accumulator piston and stuff out, drill and tap the feed hole to accept a small set screw or something for a plug then reassemble it all. Unfortunately, to remove the wavy steel from the direct clutch the trans needs to be removed and partly disassembled.
Almost forgot - I use a 6-friction direct clutch from a '70 Cadillac 472 trans. 455 Pontiac transmissions even had only 5. Some Olds 455's had 6. More frictions makes shifts firmer even with low line pressure from original line pressure springs. That in turn reduces thrust on the crank thrust bearing due to lower line pressure pushing the converter forward.

With my 400 and E-heads I get a 3rd gear chirp. That's gears! I run 3:55's, shift kit, stall, & some other stupid stuff. But it can be done cheaply & fun.

Run a manual and you shouldn't have a chirp problem with any gear

I dont think the little 400 has the balls to chirp my 5th gear though, does every other gear without a hitch... something to work on though

Other than the obvious question of why.....

Prepare to see more broken drive line and suspension parts (especially u-joints and ring gears), as well as an increase in tranny maintenance.

My low 10 second GTO doesn't chirp third, when driving normally, and it works just fine....

Why? I'll tell you why, Bruce.....he wants to impress his buddies.

I say build it to run low 12's on pump gas and still be docile enough to let your grandmother drive it to church and to hell with your buddies.

Only person that's going to impress is the guy who sells tires. He'll be able to buy a new Mercedes every year for his wife that way....

Put some donut spares on the rear, with a stock converter. Chirps won't be a problem. A 2-3 shift in a 400 that is that brutal is not a good thing. 1st- you lose et. 2nd the sunshaft and center support will suffer. Any clutch in any transmission should apply as quickly as possible with NO feel. It is not possible because of variables in engine torque troughout the powerband in a daily driver. A smooth snappy shift is what you really want.

75' Grand Am, stock 200hp 455, th400 with B&M stage 1 shift kit and 3.73:1 gears. Chirp into second and third no problem if I flog it, it might impress somebody, but it sure is hard on parts. Firm shifts are good, brutal shifts are not.

Hard shifts are bad news for rear ends......I have been through a few and Im sure the "chirps" are the culprit.
If its a daily driver I wouldnt recomend a shift kit that shifts hard enough to chirp the tires.
Very hard on drive shaft,u-joints,rear end gears and axles.

You're just looking for a "chirp" into third? If I were you I'd be looking into laying stripes in third . I've got a '69 GP with a 350hp 400.
Only mods are 1 5/8" headers, 2 1/4" exhaust, Performer intake, Holley 750cfm 4160 carb, and a TransGo shift kit; everything else is 100% stock.
This combo definitely chirps the tires in 3rd. Here's how I found out:
I was bored one day and decided to give the all the high schoolers something to look at. I was stopped at the light in front of the school. Light turned green and I floored it. Smoked the tires shifting into second and they spun about two full rotations shifting into third. (By the way, I ran out of gas about 3 blocks later - 1 block from my house - a near empty tank of gas definitely can help you make a "chirp"). Needless to say, it took several hours for that grin to leave my face. This car will also spin the tires all the way up to 45mph where it will stop accelerating but it'll keep spinning the tires. Man I love that car.
